TitleJapanese Enrollments Increase
Body
The Modern Language Association (MLA) on December 8 released the results of its most recent survey of enrollments in foreign language classes on American college and university campuses. This survey, which is conducted every three years, was conducted in Fall 2009. The total Japanese-language enrollments of 73,434 represented an increase of 10.3% over the total numbers in 2006 (which in turn had increased more than 25% over 2003). The complete results and a summary of the survey can be viewed online at http://www.mla.org/2009_enrollmentsurvey .

The results of two other recent enrollment surveys also show very healthy increases in K-12 enrollments in the United States: one survey was conducted in 2009 by the Japan Foundation (http://www.jpf.go.jp/e/japanese/survey/result/index.html ), which collects data for all countries and all levels of Japanese education outside Japan; the other survey was conducted in 2007-08 by ACTFL, which collected data on K-12 foreign language enrollments in U.S. public schools only. The ACTFL survey data, which showed an increase in Japanese language enrollments of 17.5% over the totals for 2004-05, will be released in the next few days.

Please look for more details on all the survey data for Japanese on the Association of Teachers of Japanese website soon, and in the next issue of the ATJ Newsletter.
