The conference will focus on the following topics: * multilingual acquisition * multilingual communities and multilingual communication * linguistic variation * language contact * language attrition * linguistic minorities * educational challenges in multilingual societies * multilingual language corpora The organizers invite proposals for: colloquia/workshops, individual papers, and posters on the topics listed above. Body: From http://silmw.linguistics.uiuc.edu The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in collaboration with the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies , the Center for African Studies, CIBER, the Center for Global Studies and the European Union Center is pleased to host the Second Summer Institute for the Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW-II) in summer 2010 (June 14-August 5, 2010). SILMW-II will offer intensive courses in a variety of Muslim World languages, including Turkish, Persian, Arabic, Swahili, Urdu, Wolof and Indonesian. SILMW-II provides a unique opportunity to explore the languages and cultures of the Muslim World and interact with experts in this region. In addition to classroom instruction, SILMW-II will offer a variety of extracurricular activities designed to enhance classroom instruction, provide additional channels for language contact and practice, and expose learners to the traditions of the Muslim World communities. These extracurricular activities include research forums, conversation hours, cooking demonstrations, music, film showings, and other cultural activities. Description: WestEd presents: What can teachers do to help English language learners in math class? These methods will not only help teachers to boost vocabulary knowledge in students, they will also make instruction more engaging and fun for both students and teachers. Title: Summer MA Program in Japanese Pedagogy at Columbia University
Body: The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at Columbia University invites applications for the 2010 summer M.A. program in Japanese Pedagogy, from June 7 (Monday) to August 6 (Friday), 2010. The following courses will be offered: I. Elementary Japanese Pedagogy (6/7-6/25), Professor Naomi Geyer (University of Wisconsin at Madison) and Dr. Fumiko Nazikian (Columbia University) II. Japanese Literature (6/28-7/9), Professor Janet Ikeda (Washington and Lee University) III. Sociolinguistics (7/12-7/23), Professor Kenjiro Matsuda (Kobe Shoin Women's University) IV. Cognitive Linguistics (7/26-8/6), Professor Seiichi Makino (Princeton University) Degree candidates may fulfill the requirements for the M.A. degree in three consecutive summers or in any three summers within a period of six years by taking eleven courses and writing an M.A. thesis with a focus on a particular area of Japanese Pedagogy. During these three summers, students take courses for six weeks in one summer and nine weeks during the other two summers.
