Title: Institute: Teaching Reading to Students Learning English: Direct Strategies
Body:

From http://solutions.cal.org/institutes-events/cal-institutes/teaching-reading-direct-strategies/tr-ds-july-2019

Teaching Reading to Students Learning English: Direct Strategies
July 16-18, 2019
Center for Applied Linguistics
Washington, DC

This three-day Training of Trainers (TOT) Institute is based on CAL's widely-used What’s Different About Teaching Reading to English Learners? professional development program. The training will provide participants with an understanding of the methodology and strategies for teaching English learners how to read. This research-based curriculum incorporates key findings from the National Literacy Panel (2006) on teaching reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonemic awareness and phonics to English learners. Connections will be made to college and career readiness standards (such as CCSS) including reading and writing in the content areas.

The three-day What's Different? Direct Strategies Institute is designed for elementary and middle school classroom, ESL, and reading teachers as well as school administrators who want to ensure reading progress on the part of English learners. High school teachers working with newcomers or students acquiring early literacy skills will also benefit. CAL encourages teams of ESL, reading, and classroom teachers to attend.

Title: Game Reinforces Arabic Vocabulary
Body:

Yasmine of the Transparent Language blog shares a game she learned as a child in Jordan: categories are listed across the top of a grid, and each player chooses a letter to write vertically down the side. Players fill as many squares as they can, earning higher scores for words that no other player also thought of.
