Title: Catalyst: New Platform for Language Teachers' Professional Growth
Body:

CASLS and our sister LRC, Professionals in Education Advancing Research and Language Learning, are pleased to announce the release of a new platform for language teachers' professional growth. Catalyst allows world language educators to set professional goals, identify their strengths, and upload evidence and reflections that document their ongoing growth. Learning happens most effectively within communities. With Catalyst, educators of all levels can connect with others to engage in meaningful collaboration and receive feedback on teaching practices. Workshop facilitators, department heads, and other professional mentors can encourage and support professional growth toward shared goals. Synchronous mentoring allows for real-time feedback.

Catalyst is based on the Teacher Effectiveness in Language Learning (TELL) framework and developed collaboratively by the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) and Professionals in Education Advancing Research and Language Learning (PEARLL).

Catalyst is available at https://catalyst.uoregon.edu/. Create an account and begin your collaborative journey in professional growth.

Title: Activities from STARTALK
Body:

Professionals in Education Advancing Research and Language Learning (PEARLL), one of our sister LRCs, is happy to be able to introduce you to a new resource for classroom activities from STARTALK. STARTALK is a national grant program administered by the National Foreign Language Center (NFLC) that provides summer world language learning opportunities to K-16 students and professional development opportunities to world language teachers. Throughout its 12 years, STARTALK has also developed trusted, high-quality resources for world language classrooms.

STARTALK has identified a variety of activities designed to keep learners engaged as they process and produce language. All of the activities include a short overview description, step-by-step directions, as well as helpful tips and suggestions for differentiation. Some of the activities also include video examples, strategy guides, graphic organizers or sample materials, as well as links to additional resources.

Teachers Use Mystery Skype To Give Students A Window on The World
by Amanda Morris
April 29, 2019

Some experts have found that eighth-grade classes spend just about 20 minutes a week on geography, and that's reflected in standardized tests. Just over a quarter of all eighth-graders score proficient or higher in the subject, which is a problem because knowing geography is key to understanding world events, politics and business. NPR's Amanda Morris reports on a game that some teachers are using to engage students in the world around them.
