Title: Article: ELL 2.0: How to Make the Most of the Web
Body: From http://www.teachermagazine.org/tm/articles/2009/09/23/tln_ferlazzo_ell_web.html?tkn=UYTFn3YwbnGWmydgL69vTbv%252FPBSmMgdRF2mL ELL 2.0: How to Make the Most of the Web By Larry Ferlazzo September 23, 2009 I don’t believe educational technology is a magic bullet for our students. At the same time, I do believe the Internet can be an incredibly beneficial supplement to effective classroom instruction for English-language learners. Consider, for example, the thousands of free Web sites that offer audio and visual supports for written material. That’s a huge asset if you don’t happen to have a one-to-one tutor-to-student ratio (and not many of us do!). The Internet also provides a place for ELL students to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them without fear of public embarrassment. Read Mr. Ferlazzo’s full article, which includes a short annotated list of useful websites, at http://www.teachermagazine.org/tm/articles/2009/09/23/tln_ferlazzo_ell_web.html?tkn=UYTFn3YwbnGWmydgL69vTbv%252FPBSmMgdRF2mL

Title: Article: New San Francisco High School Nurtures Immigrant Youth
Body: From http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/09/13/BABK19I46L.DTL New S.F. high school nurtures immigrant youth Jill Tucker, Chronicle Staff Writer September 14, 2009 The 50 high school students heading to their next class looked like typical teenagers, hauling backpacks, cradling books and laughing. Yet they were far from it. All recent immigrants, one was an orphan by age 6. Another cared for his sick mother and had rarely gone to school. Several had left home as children, often alone - traveling on buses, trains, cars or by foot to get to a U.S. border. Within four to six years the students - the first class of the city's new San Francisco International High School - will earn high school diplomas. The campus, which opened this year with only a freshman class, is currently housed on the fourth floor of Mission High School - a temporary site. It is expected to grow by a grade each year, reaching a maximum of 400 students. Read more: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/09/13/BABK19I46L.DTL#ixzz0RaJIk4TJ
