If you do, you're part of a broad trend among middle-class parents, said Anne Golden, a Xavier University language professor and director of the university's corporate language training programs. "So many people hang their heads if I ask them if they speak a foreign language," Golden said. " ... But they say, 'I want my kids to.'" But don't expect your son or daughter to get that instruction at school. Despite the increasing demand, foreign language instruction before seventh or eighth grade remains sparse, available in less than one-third of U.S. elementary schools, according to the Center for Applied Linguistics.
