Title: Call for Papers: TESOL's Essential Teacher
Body: This is an invitation to submit your article on innovative ways of teaching to Essential Teacher, TESOL's publication. Portal is a place for teachers and learners to share stories of classroom experimentation and learning experiences. Have you tried a variation in your teaching that "worked"? Have you risked using new techniques or technologies in your classroom? Portal seeks to share experiences that occur in the classroom when unexpected learning takes place as a result of teaching or learning exploration. Title: Call for Teaching Ideas
Body: The AATG would like to ask all teachers who have devised innovative ways of strengthening teaching and learning to consider sharing their strategies by submitting them for inclusion in the next volume of TEACHING IDEAS. TEACHING IDEAS is a compilation of strategies, tasks, projects, etc. on teaching and learning ideas that work well in the classroom, that enhance learning and improve teaching. Please share with your colleagues in the profession your favorite teaching ideas, games, projects, and techniques. Using a one-page format for each entry, please describe a technique that worked well for you in the classroom, e.g., a technique that stimulated discussion, a new way of using films, learning vocabulary, treating literature, learning grammar, illustrating a concept, etc.. There is no limit to the number of submissions you can enter. Please indicate which of the national standards your entry addresses. Submissions will be revised for suitability and edited for publication. Although we realize that in the teaching profession no idea is the single property of an individual teacher, we will recognize those who write up the idea. If you submit an idea, you will receive a free copy of the published volume, TEACHING IDEAS. Please send submissions to the AATG office or to Rosmarie Thee Morewedge (rmorewed@binghamton.edu). Title: Using Songs to Teach Grammar
Body: I use the Lennon/McCartney song "Yesterday" to raise past tense awareness, to contrast use of past tense with present tense, simple and continuous, and for practice. Present perfect abounds in Lennon/McCartney songs as well as in many others. I use "I'll be Seeing You" for future continuous. "It's Getting Better all the Time" points up the use of present continuous to describe an ongoing process, and the past habitual "used to." When you have a melody (either beautiful or "catchy" with other esthetics) wed with apt use of grammar structure, you have myriad possibilities. There are also a lot of Internet sources that will give you ideas, and they'll give you specific songs for specific purposes. Thurber, D.L. Re: Using music to teach grammar concepts. Title: Vote for the Extensive Reading Foundation 2006 Language Learner Literature Award
Body: From http://langconcepts.net/erf/poll2006.php Every year, publishers of graded readers nominate their best fiction or nonfiction books published in the previous year. The Extensive Reading Foundation international Award Jury reads the nominated books, looking for the ones they think will engage and satisfy learners of English—in short, books that are "a good read." This year the jury has choosen three finalist books in two categories: Young Learners, and Adolescents and Adults. The six finalist books for the 2006 Language Learner Literature Award are listed below. Students of English and their teachers are encouraged to read the books in their category, and to vote for the one they enjoy reading most. They can also comment on why they think that book deserves to win the 2006 Award. Voting closes on July 14, 2006. The Jury will count your votes and read your comments. Balancing such things as the availability of the books and the number of votes cast in different countries, it will choose a winner in each category. The winning books will be announced on this site on August 31st.
