Title: Intercom: August 17, 2020
Body:

There are a couple of ways to interact with this week's theme of strategies for language learning (see this week's Activity of the Week taken from CASLS's Self-Directed Learning Module).

  • Join our InterCom Live! session. We connect on Facebook every Monday at 11:00 am Pacific. To join us, open CASLS's Facebook page at the designatied time. Can't make it? The InterCom Live! events are always recorded, and you can find them on our Facebook page.
  • Before diving in, consider the relatioship between the explicit modeling and instruction of langauge strategies and learner-centered classrooms. As you consider the inherent implications, it may be beneficial to read Bishop, Canston, and King's (2014) and Cohen, Oxford, and Chi's (2002) surveys.
  • Test your knowledge and comprehension by seeing if you can complete this language learning strategy puzzle!

Happy exploration of learner-centered classrooms and language learning strategies! We are excited to continue engaging with you this week.

Title: What's My Strategy?
Body:

The text below is an excerpt from CASLS's module on self-drected learning. Please feel free to use the entire module (or an excerpt) as the learners you work with adapt to new environments for learning. Each section includes various learner resources, including videos and materials to guide and inspire goal articulation, strategy selection, evidence creation and evaluation, and self-reflection.

What's my strategy?

Language learning can be approached in many different ways, but learners have to figure out what works well for them in order to be successful. This may require some shopping around, experimentation, and practice to figure out how they learn best. Have learners watch the video below to learn about various language learning strategies and how to choose a strategy that is going to work well for them!

Now that they've learned more about selecting strategies that work, have students use the Strategies Guide (linked below) to determine language strategies that they have used before and that they would like to try in the future. If they need more strategy ideas, check out the NCSSFL Strategies Menu! Learners can return to it for more ideas about language learning strategies that they might want to try in the future.

How do I handle the language that comes my way?

Learners can watch the world around them and think about how others are using language. This is an important step in language learning. It will help them when they then try to use the language yourself! However, it may not be clear how to begin with this process. Have learners watch the next video to discover how to use observation and analysis activities to handle new language that comes towards them during goal completion.

Now that they've learned what observation and analysis activities are, have them use the following guide to walk themselves through observation and analysis of an example of someone else completing their goal.

What resources can I use?

Language learning requires a whole tool belt of good language learning resources. But how do learners find these? And how do they know if they’re any good? Have students watch the following video to find out!

Now that they've watched the video, ask students to use the Resource Guide to think through what types of resources would be useful for them in their context. They will need to think carefully about what their goal is and what information they need to learn to achieve it.

Title: How Do I Apply All This Knowledge?
Body:

The text below is an adapted excerpt from CASLS's module on self-drected learning. Please feel free to use the entire module (or an excerpt) as the learners you work with adapt to new environments for learning. Each section includes various learner resources, including videos and materials to guide and inspire goal articulation, strategy selection, evidence creation and evaluation, and self-reflection.

How do learners apply all this knowledge?

Once learners have done all the necessary preparation, they can start working on their specific goals. There are some important things to consider while doing this, though, so have learners watch the video below to learn more about goal completion and what to pay attention to while they're doing it.

How do learners demonstrate their progress?

While working on their goal, learners will need to create some evidence to demonstrate their progress. The evidence can be so many things like pictures, recordings, or souvenirs, but the most important part is that it is meaningful for them! Make sure the evidence helps them document their goal completion and their growth as a language learner. Check out the following video to learn about what makes quality evidence and what students can do with it.

Title: How Do Learners Evaluate Progress?
Body:

The text below is an excerpt from CASLS's module on self-drected learning. Please feel free to use the entire module (or an excerpt) as the learners you work with adapt to new learning environments . Each section includes various learner resources, including videos and materials to guide and inspire goal articulation, strategy selection, evidence creation and evaluation, and self-reflection.

How Do Learners Evaluate Progress?

Once learners have created evidence of growth, they will need to self-assess the quality of that evidence. Self-assessment is a critical step, because it helps learners figure out the ways in which they have been successful and the places where they could use a little more help. Knowing this information will help them as they continue learning their new language. Learners will be able to see what they need to practice more and what they already do really well. Have learners watch the video below to learn what self-assessment is and how to conduct it for their language learning goal.

Ask learners to use the following self-assessment guide to evaluate their hard work. Chose one or more of the seven included templates. Encourage them to be honest, but not too hard on themselves.

Title: Teaching Materials for 9/11
Body:

From: https://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org/2008/08/13/the-best-sites-to-help-teach-about-911/

The anniversary of 9/11 is approaching, and blog author Mr. Larry Ferlazzo has organzied a series of materials for teachers who want to discuss 9/11 with their learners. These resources incorporate moving images that could be utilized in any language classroom. Additionally, though the resources are in English, the sources provided would be a great point of departure for comparing how the events of 9/11 were covered by media outlets accross languages and language varieties.
