Title: Call for Research: L2 Flipped Classroom Experimental Reports
Body:

From https://linguistlist.org/issues/30/30-3027.html

Joseph P. Vitta and Ali H. Al-Hoorie have the following request:

"We are in the final stages of doing a meta-analysis on the effectiveness of flipped teaching on (second/foreign) language learning. Flipped teaching, in a general sense, involves students’ learning of the material outside of class time (usually with the use of technology, such as videos), so that class time is then utilized by the teacher for exercises and discussions involving the material learned beforehand.

"Past meta-analyses have tended to focus on published literature. However, this raises the risk of publication bias, since studies with significant results usually have a better chance of being published. We are trying to minimize this risk in our meta-analysis by asking researchers to send us their unpublished findings.

"We are specifically looking for flipped teaching studies adopting a (quasi-)experimental design (contrasting the effectiveness of a traditional face-to-face approach with a flipped intervention) using a quantitative dependent variable that measures gains in the target language (such as vocabulary and writing proficiency). We welcome studies on all target languages, in all contexts, and regardless of whether the results are significant or not.

"Therefore, if you have an unpublished study (including as part of an MA or PhD degree), please consider sending us a copy to include it in our analysis."

The entire call for research studies is available at https://linguistlist.org/issues/30/30-3027.html

Title: Applications Open for Fall 2019 Cohort for Introduction to Online Language Teaching
Body:

From https://celta.msu.edu/intro-online-language-teaching/

The Center for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA) and the English Language Center (ELC) at Michigan State University have focused on promoting the development and teaching of quality online language courses and programs at Michigan State University. They are now happy to offer our internal professional development course, Introduction to Online Language Teaching, to language educators outside of MSU.

Introduction to Online Language Teaching is a fully online course designed for experienced classroom instructors who want to make the transition to teaching languages online. While each participant will bring his/her own pedagogical background, the course presupposes a task-based, proficiency-oriented view of language instruction. Course participants will gain an understanding of key criteria and conceptual frameworks used to describe online pedagogy, and will develop expertise in the areas of course quality and design, accessibility, and media.

Dates: September 16 - November 22
Application Deadline: September 10, 2019

While the course is designed for higher education professionals, language educators from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Because space is very limited, participants will be selected on a first come, first served basis.

NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Announces CreateNYC Language Access Fund
August 16, 2019

The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) has announced the CreateNYC Language Access Fund to support cultural organizations' efforts to increase access to cultural programming for audiences whose primary language is not English. Building on recommendations in the CreateNYC cultural plan, the new fund will support the creation and presentation of work for non-English-speaking audiences, bilingual cultural programming intended primarily for non-English speakers, and multilingual community engagement in the arts. The initiative aims to remove barriers to participation in arts and culture for the millions of New Yorkers who are non-English speakers, multilingual learners (MLLs), English language learners (ELLs), and sign language users.

After Hawaiian language immersion ruling, fate of Lanai schools still uncertain
by Michael Brestovansky
August 18, 2019

The Hawaii Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the state Constitution requires that students be provided access to Hawaiian language immersion education.

Justices on the court ruled 4-1 in support of Chelsa-Marie Kealohalani Clarabal, a Lanai mother whose children only had access to intermittent lessons taught in Hawaiian after moving from Maui to Lanai.

Although there are Hawaiian immersion public schools on five of the major islands, there are none on Lanai, which the court ruled was in contradiction to constitutional amendments made in 1978 that obligated the state to provide for public Hawaiian education programs.
