Title: Book: Integrating Assessment into Early Language Learning and Teaching
Body:

From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781788924801

Integrating Assessment into Early Language Learning and Teaching
Edited by Danijela Prošic-Santovac and Shelagh Rixon
Published by Multilingual Matters

The volume unites research and practice on integrating language learning, teaching and assessment at preschool and early school age. It includes chapters written by experts in the field who have studied some of the very youngest (pre-primary) children through to those up to the age of 12, in a variety of private and state contexts across Europe. The collection makes a much-needed contribution to the subject of appropriate assessment for children with the focus of many chapters being classroom-based assessment, particularly formative assessment, or the case for developing assessment skills in relation to even the youngest children. As a whole, the book provides useful case study insights for policymakers, teacher educators, researchers and postgraduate students with interest in or responsibility for how children are assessed in their language learning. It also provides practical ideas for practitioners who wish to implement greater integration of assessment and learning in their own contexts.

Digital Classical Philology: Ancient Greek and Latin in the Digital Revolution
Edited by Monica Berti
Published by de Gruyter

Thanks to the digital revolution, even a traditional discipline like philology has been enjoying a renaissance within academia and beyond. Decades of work have been producing groundbreaking results, raising new research questions and creating innovative educational resources. This book describes the rapidly developing state of the art of digital philology with a focus on Ancient Greek and Latin, the classical languages of Western culture. Contributions cover a wide range of topics about the accessibility and analysis of Greek and Latin sources. The discussion is organized in five sections concerning open data of Greek and Latin texts; catalogs and citations of authors and works; data entry, collection and analysis for classical philology; critical editions and annotations of sources; and finally linguistic annotations and lexical databases. As a whole, the volume provides a comprehensive outline of an emergent research field for a new generation of scholars and students, explaining what is reachable and analyzable that was not before in terms of technology and accessibility.

Body:

From https://linguistlist.org/issues/30/30-2958.html

This special issue of Critical Multilingualism Studies welcomes contributions that provide a broad, critical review on theoretical, empirical, and/or pedagogical issues associated with the role of regional linguistic variation in FL studies. Contributions may focus on - but are not restricted to - some of the following questions: What are current theoretical and pedagogical approaches as well as empirical insights concerning regional variation in FL teaching and learning? What social, political, economic, and/or pedagogical arguments, concerns, or norms favor certain varieties over others? What are the implications of non-monocentric views on language for FL teaching and learning, teacher education and training, curricular goals and assessment, language policy and planning, etc.?

The deadline for receipt of statements of interest is September 30, 2019.

Title: Kentucky Department of Education Seeks Feedback and Participation World Language Standard
Body:

From https://www.kentuckyteacher.org/news/2019/08/feedback-and-teacher-participation-sought-on-world-language-standard/

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is seeking feedback on the Kentucky Standard for World Language Proficiency. While this document is not a standards document, its review will serve as a baseline to begin the process of standards adoption for world languages.

Senate Bill 175 (2019) calls for the KDE to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards and aligned assessments beginning in the 2017-2018 school year. The schedule calls for specific content areas to be reviewed each year and every six years after that on a rotating basis. For the next year, world language documents will be reviewed and the process of standards adoption will take place.

To provide feedback on the Kentucky Standard for World Language Proficiency document, fill out an online survey by September 18.

KDE also is seeking current world language teachers of all grade levels and postsecondary educators to participate in the world languages standards revision work. Applicants will be required to meet five to 10 days during the winter and spring of the 2019-2020 school year and possibly into the 2020-2021 school year.

Learn more about how you can provide feedback at https://www.kentuckyteacher.org/news/2019/08/feedback-and-teacher-participation-sought-on-world-language-standard/

The survey is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KDEworldlanguage

Information about being on the World Language Standards Review Committee and Advisory Panel is available at https://www.kentuckyteacher.org/news/2019/08/applications-sought-for-world-language-standards-committees/

Finally, KDE is offering a professional learning series about standards implementation; learn more here: https://www.kentuckyteacher.org/bulletin-board/announcements/2019/08/standards-implementation-professional-learning-series-announced/

Title: Interactive Exhibition: Virtual Bauhaus
Body:

From https://www.goethe.de/ins/us/en/sta/los/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=21561522

On the occasion of the Bauhaus centennial, the Goethe-Institut, in cooperation with the A+D Museum, presents Virtual Bauhaus, an interactive exhibition on the German school of art and design using the medium of virtual reality.

Set within the Dessau building, which was constructed in 1925–26 according to designs by the school’s first director, Walter Gropius, Virtual Bauhaus offers visitors a one-of-a-kind experience, transporting them into the architectural space of the building as it existed in the 1920s. Through this immersive environment, visitors explore the school’s central ideas through encounters with its architectural interior.

Virtual Bauhaus is on view during A+D Museum visiting hours, September 7-29, 2019.

Title: Book: Memes to Movements: How the World's Most Viral Media Is Changing Social Protest and Power

Memes to Movements: How the World's Most Viral Media Is Changing Social Protest and Power
By An Xiao Mina
Published by Penguin Random House

Memes are the street art of the social web. Using social media–driven movements as her guide, technologist and digital media scholar An Xiao Mina unpacks the mechanics of memes and how they operate to reinforce, amplify, and shape today’s politics. She finds that the “silly” stuff of meme culture—the photo remixes, the selfies, the YouTube songs, and the pun-tastic hashtags—are fundamentally intertwined with how we find and affirm one another, direct attention to human rights and social justice issues, build narratives, and make culture. Mina finds parallels, for example, between a photo of Black Lives Matter protestors in Ferguson, Missouri, raising their hands in a gesture of resistance and one from eight thousand miles away, in Hong Kong, of Umbrella Movement activists raising yellow umbrellas as they fight for voting rights. She shows how a viral video of then presidential nominee Donald Trump laid the groundwork for pink pussyhats, a meme come to life as the widely recognized symbol for the international Women’s March.

Memes to Movements unveils the transformative power of memes, for better and for worse. At a time when our movements are growing more complex and open-ended—when governments are learning to wield the internet as effectively as protestors—Mina brings a fresh and sharply innovative take to the media discourse.
