Title: Ethnic Foods in the Classroom
Body: A recent discussion on the FLTEACH listserv generated the following suggestions for bringing ethnic flavor to your classroom. ----- Last year I held a tropical fruit day in the spring. We had just read a story that mentioned several of them. Everyone got to taste different fruits, and our heritage students showed us all the correct way to cut a papaya. It was fun, didn't take too much time, no one had to cook anything, everyone participated, and I think it left an impression, as some of them still mention it. Tuttle, L. Re: Latin American foods. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (11 Feb. 2005). ----- For recipes try http://www.melissaguerra.com/list_recipe.cfm You may have seen Melissa's cooking program on PBS. Philips, J. Title: Language Club Fundraiser Ideas
Body: A recent request on the AATG listserv for language club fundraiser ideas received the following suggestions. These may be used for any language or level, for funding class trips, projects, etc., and they also raise awareness of foreign language classes. ----- My students do a Valentine's Day fundraiser for my German/French Club. Parents, merchants, teachers and even some students donate items, such as restaurant coupons, stuffed animals, candy, chocolates, videos, etc. We buy a sizeable basket, pink/transparent wrap and bows. Students sell chances (one for $1.00 and six for $5.00).The lucky winner is announced on Valentine's Day. Poikonen, T. Re: [AATG-L] successful fundraiser. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (10 Feb. 2005). ----- We had a great bake sale around the holidays. Students either baked at home or they came to a bake party the night before. We had lots of German recipes. Faculty were also invited (to sit in another room and taste-test when necessary). If you have lots of students selling the goods, it creates a buzz around the table and draws a good crowd. Staff and faculty are the most important customers, so sending students around to the offices with baskets of goodies always brings them back stuffed with cash. Caplin-Carbin, L. Re: [AATG-L] successful fundraiser. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (10 Feb. 2005). ----- Our school has the best fundraiser ever. Other than printing costs and some paint, there are no costs or overhead. Raffle off really-close-to-the-school parking lot spaces. The school set aside 10 'special' spots close to the door and sold raffle tickets for a drawing to see who won the spots. The winners get special decals for their car indicating that only they can park there. I think they painted the curb as well. If your school (or students) has any parking problems at all, it will be an instant money-maker. Dix, E. Re: [AATG-L] successful fundraiser. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (10 Feb. 2005). ----- Our German Club sold waffles during lunch. We had the kids donate all the ingredients and bring in waffle makers from home. We had powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, Nutella, peanut butter, cherry and blueberry pie filling, and whipped cream. These toppings are very similar to the toppings used on authentic German waffles. We sold them for 5 lunch periods and earned $400. Guten Appetit! Mol, D. Re: [AATG-L] successful fundraiser. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (11 Feb. 2005). ----- The German Club and the Spanish Club work together to create a "Valentine's Dance" at our school. We sell tickets for $7 a single or $14 a couple. After we pay the DJ, rent-a-cops, supplies, etc., we usually make $800 or more per club. I'm thinking that we earned over $1000 each last year. It 's a semi-formal, and the freshmen and sophomores go all out since they can't go to prom. We have photographers and everything. It turns into a "sweet" Sweetheart Dance for both of our clubs. Clark, J. Re: [AATG-L] successful fundraiser. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (11 Feb. 2005). ----- We just did a good fundraiser - a bowlathon. A local bowling alley gave us a good rate on lanes/shoe rental. Each student got people to 'sponsor' them by offering to pay a certain amount per pin or a flat rate. We bowled 3 games, and the best games were recorded. No money up front (each student paid for their own bowling) and a good time with the kids. Flynn, A. Re: [AATG-L] successful fundraiser. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv. (12 Feb. 2005).

Title: Strategies for Addressing Pronunciation Problems
Body: A recent discussion on the FLTEACH listserv generated the following suggestions for pronunciation practice in the language classroom. ----- I require students to memorize poems and recite them at least once a month. For assessment, along with in-class recitation I ask them to turn in a cassette tape with their very best effort. They can spend as much time recording and re-recording as they like and turn in the tape only when they're completely satisfied with it. (Notice the sneaky way of encouraging lots of practice time!) This does not result in instant perfection in their spontaneous conversation, but it does seem to help over the long haul as they have spent time focusing on particular sounds or sets thereof. Freeman, M. Pronunciation practice-rhymes and poems. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (9 Feb. 2005). ----- I choose some of the most difficult words from the current vocab, write them in a row on a transparency, divide the class in two teams, like a spelling bee, and tell the students they must pronounce the word correctly or they will have to sit down. If they are correct they go to the back of the line, and so forth until only one is standing, thus the winners. If they talk during this they must sit down as well. It's quick, easy to make, easy to play, a great 5-10 min. filler and gets the job done. Sandoval, A. Pronunciation practice-rhymes and poems. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (7 Feb. 2005). ----- Tongue twisters are entertaining to practice. Pento, A. Pronunciation practice-rhymes and poems. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (7 Feb. 2005).
