Title: Webinar: Task-based Language Teaching: Why, What, and How
Body:

From https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/9257225

Free webinar sponsored by the Center for Language Instruction and Coordination at the University of Illinois: "Task-based Language Teaching: Why, What, and How"

Presenter: Dr. Julio Torres (University of California, Irvine)
Date: Thursday October 4, 2018.

Description: This webinar aims to provide an overview of task-based language teaching (TBLT), which adopts meaning-based, communicative tasks, as the central unit for defining learning needs, determining curriculum goals, and assessing language competencies. The presenter will begin with a rationale for adopting TBLT as a viable pedagogical approach to teaching second/heritage languages. Participants will also get an overview of a TBLT program. Most of the webinar will be devoted to the design of task-based lessons, which include the criteria for creating a task as well as pre-task and post-task cycles to support the use of the task for instructional purposes. Examples will be provided to illustrate these three phases of task-based instruction.

Title: Language Learning Strong in New Jersey

Why N.J. students dominate the U.S. in learning foreign languages
by Disha Raychaudhuri
September 5, 2018

New Jersey, known for its strong education system, has a highest number of K-12 students learning a foreign language in school, according to a report by the American Councils for International Education. Compared to other states, we're off the charts.

A whopping 51 percent of New Jersey students are enrolled in foreign language classes, compared to 20 percent nationwide. The Garden State's followed by Washington, D.C., at 47 percent, and Wisconsin, at 36 percent.

...Nearly a third of New Jersey residents now speak a language other than English at home, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That's driven by the continued growth in the state's immigrant population. The Garden State now ranks fourth in the number of non-English speaking residents behind only Texas, New Mexico and California.
