Title: Ideas for Karneval
Body: Editor's note: A recent query on the AATG listserv for ideas for celebrating Karneval in the classroom generated the following Web sites and activity suggestions: For general Karneval information: http://www.swr.de/fastnacht/links/index.html http://goethenet.net/karneval/2005/ For Rucki Zucki melody and lyrics: http://www.hn.tue.schule-bw.de/schproj/musik/diewiss.htm http://www.midifiles.de/Index0068.htm http://www.lyrix.at ----- I do a day that tries to capture the spirit of the season. Each student must wear a preferably funny hat (G rated) to get into class on that day. I serve Kreppel, we dance the Rucki Zucki, and play crazy games, just to get the students into the spirit of the festivities. Prior to that day I talk about my own experiences in Mainz and show a power point so they have some visual connection, working with pertinent vocabulary. Every few years I set up my principal to come into the room, where I immediately cut off his tie. (That actually takes place on Weiberfastnacht, the Thursday before) My advanced students go 'in die Bütt' and present their own Büttenrede, after having read some examples the week before. I always have a personalized poem for each group, too, which I present to them. It's a day they don't forget. Reid, P. Re: [AATG-L] Karneval. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. Title: Chinese Zodiac Teaching Resources
Body: Happy Chinese New Year! In late January or early February, many Asian cultures usher in a new year that corresponds to one of twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog or pig. Chinese astrologists believe the characteristics of a given zodiac animal influences the personality of every person born in that year. For example, those born in a Rooster year (2005, 1993 and 1981) are believed to be hardworking, resourceful, talented and fussy. Do you think your personality correlates to the year in which you were born, or is it all just nonsense? What type of personality does a dog have? How is it different from a cat? Do you think you are more like a cat or a dog? Ask each student to select one animal from the Chinese zodiac (either by random or according to birth year). Ask students to use library, video or Internet resources to research the behaviors of their animals. Some children may even have access to their chosen animal as a household pet or farm animal. Ask students to indicate what human-like personality traits the animals have, such as playfulness, happiness, sadness, grouchiness. Have students present their findings to the class. As an extension to the activity, visit a local zoo or nature center to observe animals up close. Continue investigating the animals of the Chinese zodiac in: "Animal Communication" (6-8) from Science NetLinks, American Association for the Advancement of Science http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/lessons.cfm?BenchmarkID=6&DocID=388 "Animals of the Chinese Zodiac" (K-2) from EDSITEment, National Endowment for the Humanities http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=344 "Lions, Dragons and Nian: Animals of the Chinese New Year" (K-2) from EDSITEment, National Endowment for the Humanities http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=381 MarcoPolo.
