TitleChinese Zodiac Teaching Resources
Body
Happy Chinese New Year! In late January or early February, many Asian
cultures usher in a new year that corresponds to one of twelve animals in the
Chinese zodiac: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey,
rooster, dog or pig. Chinese astrologists believe the characteristics of a given
zodiac animal influences the personality of every person born in that year. For
example, those born in a Rooster year (2005, 1993 and 1981) are believed to
be hardworking, resourceful, talented and fussy. Do you think your personality
correlates to the year in which you were born, or is it all just nonsense?

What type of personality does a dog have? How is it different from a cat? Do
you think you are more like a cat or a dog?

Ask each student to select one animal from the Chinese zodiac (either by
random or according to birth year). Ask students to use library, video or
Internet resources to research the behaviors of their animals. Some children
may even have access to their chosen animal as a household pet or farm
animal. Ask students to indicate what human-like personality traits the
animals have, such as playfulness, happiness, sadness, grouchiness. Have
students present their findings to the class. As an extension to the activity, visit
a local zoo or nature center to observe animals up close.
