Title: LangCred: Website Summarizes State Requirements for Language Teacher Certification
Body:

From http://langcred.org/about-us/

U.S. K-12 world language teachers seeking credentials must satisfy several requirements. In 2014, researchers at CLASSRoad, a non-profit organization for educational technology and world language professional development, secured funding from STARTALK and the National Foreign Language Center to create a dynamic website displaying simplified state requirements for world language teacher certification. The LangCred team researched state requirements and procedures, then simplified the information and presented it in a searchable format on LangCred.org.

LangCred users can make an account, search, save and even compare credential routes. New in 2016 is the much-anticipated feature to search, save and compare teacher programs. Over 900 programs are featured on the site. Comprehensive lists of Basic Skills, English Language Proficiency, and transcript evaluation requirements are now available. Such resources are especially informative for those seeking a degree evaluation, or those assisting international students with foreign degrees. Teachers of the less commonly taught languages can participate and learn from peers on the LangCred community forum.

The LangCred website is available at http://langcred.org/

Title: Rhode Island Bill to Promote Dual Language Education
Body:

From http://www.providencejournal.com/news/20180425/ri-bill-would-promote-dual-language-education?start=2

R.I bill would promote dual-language education
by Linda Borg
April 25, 2018

Two Providence legislators have proposed a bill to add a position at the Rhode Island Department of Education to coordinate and promote the creation of more dual-language programs in public schools.

...At Wednesday’s press conference at the State House, the bill’s sponsors, Sen. Frank Ciccone and Rep. Grace Diaz, both Providence Democrats, said that research has shown that students enrolled in dual-language programs are more successful academically than their peers and more likely to attend college.

Erin Papa, past president of the Rhode Island Foreign Language Association, said the bill sets aside $200,000, most of which would pay for a specialist at the education department to lead dual-language initiatives statewide. It would also provide a small amount of seed money to expand existing immersion programs.

Title: Online Course: Sign Language Structure, Learning, and Change
Body:

From https://www.edx.org/course/sign-language-structure-learning-change-georgetownx-slsx-401-01x

Here is a free upcoming course offered through edX by Ted Supalla of Georgetown University:

Sign Language Structure, Learning, and Change

This course aims to integrate the history of ideas about American Sign Language (ASL) with research that has been done on the structure, learning, and historical change of ASL and other sign languages. Structure is crucial to languages. There are several layers of grammatical structure in all languages. We will learn about these and examine how sign languages are structured.

Learning is how children and adults acquire the ability to understand and use a sign language. Change takes place over time in all languages. Recent research on historical change in ASL and other sign languages has begun to reveal how sign languages come into existence and how they change as they are used over generations among deaf and hearing users. We will look at historical change in depth, especially the historical heritage of ASL.

This course is a four-week self-paced course. Lecture videos are delivered in ASL with English subtitles and voiceover. The course will introduce all of these students to the science of sign language research and, for fluent ASL signers, the history and structure of their own language. It will also expose students at the intermediate level to the fields of linguistics and the cognitive sciences.

Title: Current Conversations Video Features Jonathon Stalling Talking about Chinese
Body:

From https://mailchi.mp/asiasociety/china-learning-initiatives-apr2018?e=c00fca3321

In the February 26 episode of "Current Conversations," a video series from the University of Oklahoma, Jonathon Stalling, a specialist on Chinese and American literature and language and curator of the Chinese literature in translation archive at OU — walks viewers through a new exhibit, titled "Poetics of Invention: Bridging Modern Languages with Ancient Technologies." Although on the surface a demonstration of how people learn English in China, he uncovers how we can explore a traditional Chinese worldview through its language and demonstrates how the linguistic technology built 1,000 years ago in China can be used today.

Title: Smithsonian Learning Lab Resource: Japanese Americans during WWII
Body:

Two weeks ago (http://caslsintercom.uoregon.edu/content/24933) we described the Smithsonian Learning Lab, an interactive website for the discovery and creative use of the Smithsonian's digital collections and tools. Here is a collection of resources based around an interview with Grant Ichikawa, a U.S. Army veteran who enlisted after he was relocated to a Japanese American incarceration camp with his family in 1942. The unit is intended for students age 9 through 18.

Title: LGBT Voices in Russia: Lena Klimova’s “Children-404” Today
Body:

From http://jordanrussiacenter.org

Shaun Gabrielli describes the inception of, use of, crackdown on, and follow-up of Children-404, a forum for LTBT people in Russia. He writes, "The website is structured as a blog to which citizens of the Russian Federation can anonymously submit their stories. It is written entirely in English, making these stories accessible to people worldwide. In many of these stories, citizens, most of them teenagers, narrate their personal experiences with bullying and homophobia. For children living in a homophobic environment, the sense of community Children-404 provides is extremely important in reminding them that they are not alone, that others are living under similar circumstances. ...Although Children-404 was most active in the months immediately following its inception, it could still be a useful portal for LGBT+ adolescents wishing to read personal narratives by individuals in a similar position. There is no question that access to such a site can help users begin to feel comfortable with their own identities, not to mention less alone in an often intolerant environment."
