The Center for Language Acquisition and the Center for Language Science at The Pennsylvania State University invite submissions for posters presentations to take place on the afternoon of Thursday, October 4th, 2018. While all submissions on the topic of multidisciplinary language acquisition will be considered, particularly welcome are contributions with an emphasis on bilingualism, cognition, psycholinguistics, and instructed/classroom-based learning.

The abstract submission deadline is July 1, 2018.

Title: Call for Proposals: 6th International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation

The 6th International Conference on Language Documentation & Conservation (ICLDC), Connecting Communities, Languages & Technology, will be held February 28-March 3, 2019, at the Hawai’i Imin International Conference Center on the campus of the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. The 6th ICLDC is hosted by the Department of Linguistics and the National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa and is generously supported with funding from the National Science Foundation.

The conference program will feature three Keynote talks, Talk Story sessions, Workshops, papers, and posters. New for 2019 is the Technology Showcase, a networking opportunity which will bring together technology developers and language community members. An optional Hilo Field Study (on the Big Island of Hawai’i) to visit Hawaiian language revitalization programs in action will take place immediately after the conference (March 4-5, 2019).

Following a format introduced at the ICLDC 2017, the organizers are including a 90-minute block on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to be dedicated to two alternative conference activities: Workshops and Talk Story discussions. The organizers also introduce a new conference event, the Technology Showcase, which will bring together technology developers and community members to explore new applications of language technology. Finally, the organizers welcome proposals for regular paper and poster presentations as well. 

Please note the differing deadlines and guidelines for the Workshops and Talk Story proposals (June 30) and the Paper, Poster, and Technology Showcase proposals (August 31).

Title: Language Testing Research Colloquium

The International Language Testing Association invites you to come to New Zealand to participate in the Language Testing Research Colloquium (LTRC), which will be held in Auckland from 2 to 6 July 2018. 

From a small meeting of language testers in a hotel room in Boston in 1979, LTRC has grown to be the major international conference for research on language testing and assessment and has been held in diverse locations around the world.

Title: Nominations Open for Kentucky World Language Teaching Awards

The Kentucky World Language Association (KWLA) is seeking nominations for Outstanding New Teacher, Outstanding Post-Secondary Teacher, Outstanding Teacher (K-16), Outstanding Administrator, Lifetime Achievement, and Amici Linguarum – or “Friend of Languages.” Winners will be announced at the association’s annual conference in September.

The winner of the Outstanding Teacher Award will go on to the regional Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT) in the spring of the next year to vie for the title of SCOLT Teacher of the Year. The person who wins at SCOLT then goes on to be considered for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages National Language Teacher of the Year. 

The deadline for nominations is June 15.

Title: Dual Language Education Fundamentals Workshop

The Center for Applied Linguistics will offer a workshop on May 30, 2018, in Texas, titled "Dual Language Education Fundamentals Workshop." This informative and interactive one-day workshop helps participants understand the fundamentals of dual language education and use that knowledge to evaluate starting or enhancing a dual language program on their campus.

Topics include exploring the research base and learning key components of dual language programming and instruction. Participants will identify strategies for developing and enhancing dual language programs and examine best practices of successful programs. Examples and information from the widely-used Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education will be shared through a range of hands-on activities. Practical research-based instructional strategies and opportunities to share ideas with colleagues are embedded throughout the presentation.

This workshop is designed for PreK-12 administrators, teachers, and teacher teams seeking a solid base of understanding about the fundamentals of dual language and the opportunity to explore, with leading experts in the field, how it can be implemented effectively on their campus.

The two-day institute will feature the CAL Assessment Toolkit developed by CAL's subject matter experts based on decades of research and practice. The toolkit provides a comprehensive framework as well as techniques and strategies for assessment development and use. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of underlying principles of assessment (such as validity, reliability, item formats, cultural bias and sensitivity and more) and leave equipped with a variety of research-based practices for assessment development and adaptation. Portions of each day will be reserved for reflection and guided practice.

This useful and enlightening institute is designed for K-12 content and ESL/ELL educators. Classroom teachers, as well as coordinators, specialists, and instructional coaches are encouraged to attend. District level staff and administrators involved in assessment development will also greatly benefit from the information and practical implications of this institute.
