Title: Technological Innovation for Specialized Linguistic Domains
Body:

From http://www.tislid18.ugent.be/

The third conference on Technological Innovation for Specialized Linguistic Domains (TISLID 18), Languages for digital lives and cultures, is to be held at Ghent University, Belgium, 24-26 May 2018.

This event offers a great opportunity to interchange knowledge and experiences, both in a formal and informal, creative way, regarding language-based digital realities. This new forum aims to promote academic debate on digital language technologies, with a special focus on their potential for promoting communication and (lifelong) learning.

The conference will include keynotes, paper presentations, posters, a roundtable debate (on Thursday and Friday) and workshops (on Saturday).

Title: Conference: Assessing Speaking in Context – New Trends
Body:

From http://assessing-speaking.rice.edu/

Assessing Speaking in Context – New Trends
May 4-5
Rice University

Several strands of research on second language acquisition/development have recently focused on the complex environment of interactional dynamics of language use in properly contextualized situations of language use (Brouwer, 2013; Hall, Hellermann & Pekarek Doehler, 2011; Kasper & Wagner, 2014). At the same time, many institutions have begun to integrate those research findings into teaching practices aimed at improving learners’ interactional competence (Barraja-Rohan, 2011; Sert, 2015). Inasmuch as these trends are very promising toward the development of a comprehensive and ecologically valid definition of language use, it is becoming clear that both researchers and teachers need to design assessment materials and procedures that

1. reflect research findings about language use in context,
2. incorporate sound pedagogical practices to prepare learners for those types of assessment, and
3. can be implemented considering the obvious logistical challenges of such an ambitious pedagogical and assessment task.

Title: Reajer: Japanese Reading Practice
Body:

From http://www.reajer.com/

Reajer is a website by Dan Bornstein that has bilingual Japanese-English texts organized by level of difficulty, arranged as follows:

  • The text is broken down into sentences.
  • Each new sentence is marked with a triangle (▼) for easy orientation.
  • Each sentence appears twice, with the second version showing the kanji readings. In order to achieve optimal visibility and compatibility with a wide range of viewing environments, the readings follow the characters instead of being placed above them.
  • An English translation follows right below the second version of the Japanese sentence. The translation is as literal as possible but may add information for clarity.
  • Where necessary, language notes appear below the translation, marked with bullet points.
  • The original text of the selection appears again at the end of the text, this time without translation or annotation. Kanji readings that were originally indicated in the text are included here as well.

Title: Reflection: Lessons Learned from a Course on Inequality in Classical Greece and the United States Today
Body:

From https://eidolon.pub

Elina Salminen writes, "I’m hardly a radical in the modern sense of the word, but for a while now I’ve been trying to uproot my own pedagogical habits and ground them in (to stretch the simile) more open terrain. Recently, I taught a course on inequality in classical Greece and the modern-day United States that included collaborations with organizations furthering social justice. About half of class time was spent discussing the ancient world, and about half, the modern. The course was built using a framework for community-based learning, called “engaged learning,” a more recent, more thoughtful manifestation of service-learning. The following includes some of the lessons I learned while applying these pedagogical ideals into practice; I also highlight my students’ experiences through direct quotations used with their permission."
