Beyond Teaching English: Supporting High School Completion by Immigrant and Refugee Students
By Julie Sugarman
Published by the Migration Policy Institute

Many of the insights discussed in this report were shared by participants in the Learning Network for Newcomer Youth Success, a project of MPI's National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy that brings together practitioners from the education, physical and mental health, and social service fields to discuss common challenges and effective solutions. School districts across the United States are honing their approaches to help newcomer students meet the challenges they face—from developing processes to identify students' academic and socioemotional needs, to connecting them with mental-health and legal supports, and tailoring curricular pathways in ways that balance student needs with policy constraints.

Title: Book: L3 Syntactic Transfer

L3 Syntactic Transfer: Models, new developments and implications
Edited by Tanja Angelovska and Angela Hahn
Published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company

This book fills an existing gap in the field of third language acquisition (L3A) by bringing together theoretical, empirical, and practical accounts that contribute to informed teaching practices in multilingual classrooms. The volume is organized into three sections that focus on prominent syntactic transfer models in the field of L3A and together provide insights into the interplay of the influences of prior languages in L3 syntax and how we can enrich the practical field of instructed L3 acquisition. Part I includes original papers dealing with new developments of existing theoretical models on syntactic transfer in L3A and Part II consists of empirical studies testing existing models from different perspectives (formal, lexico-functional, and neurocognitive). Following these two sections, Part III discusses how theory can inform practices for L3 learning and teaching. This concise compilation brings to light innovations, not only in terms of theoretical refinements and practical implementations, but also in offering an impressive range of language combinations. This book is intended to act as a unique resource for scholars, applied linguists, language educators, both novices and experts alike, in and beyond the field of L3A.

Remix Multilingualism: Hip Hop, Ethnography and Performing Marginalized Voices
By Quentin Williams
Published by Bloomsbury Publishing

"Remixing multilingualism" is conceptualized in this book as engaging in the linguistic act of using, combining and manipulating multilingual forms. It is about creating new ways of 'doing' multilingualism through cultural acts and identities and involving a process that invokes bricolage. This book is an ethnographic study of multilingual remixing achieved by highly multilingual participants in the local hip hop culture of Cape Town. In globalized societies today previously marginalized speakers are carving out new and innovating spaces to put on display their voices and identities through the creative use of multilingualism.

This book contributes to the development of new conceptual insights and theoretical developments on multilingualism in the global South by applying the notions of stylization, performance, performativity, entextualisation and enregisterment. This takes place through interviews, performance analysis and interactional analysis, showing how young multilingual speakers stage different personae, styles, registers and language varieties.

Title: Book: Teaching Intercultural Competence Across the Age Range

Teaching Intercultural Competence Across the Age Range: From Theory to Practice
Edited by Manuela Wagner, Dorie Conlon Perugini, and Michael Byram
Published by Multilingual Matters

This ground-breaking book is the first to describe in detail how teachers, supported by university educators and education advisers, might plan and implement innovative ideas based on sound theoretical foundations. Focusing on the teaching and learning of intercultural communicative competence in foreign language classrooms in the USA, the authors describe a collaborative project in which graduate students and teachers planned, implemented and reported on units which integrated intercultural competence in a systematic way in classrooms ranging from elementary to university level. The authors are clear and honest about what worked and what didn’t, both in their classrooms and during the process of collaboration. This book will be useful reading for both scholars and teachers interested in applying academic theory in the classroom, and in the teaching of intercultural competence.
