Title: Transitional Kindergarten Benefits English Learners
Body:

Research shows transitional kindergarten benefit for English learners
by Deborah Kong
July 2, 2017

“To the mountain of research on one of the most effective interventions that prepares children to succeed in school, we can now add one more: new findings that transitional kindergarten gives English learners a substantial boost in the year before kindergarten.

“…The study, conducted by the American Institutes for Research (AIR), found clear advantages for English learners in transitional kindergarten over similar children who did not attend TK:

• almost six months of learning in problem-solving skills that are an important part of mathematics;
• more than seven months of learning on literacy skills; and
• one full performance level, or 60 points, on the California English Language Development Test (CELDT), which measures English proficiency.

“Spanish speaking students in transitional kindergarten also did not lose their Spanish vocabulary, researchers found. This is critical because research states that strong skills in both home language and English at kindergarten entry predict the best long-term outcomes for kids.”

Title: The Dictogloss Strategy and Resources for Online Dictation
Body:

From http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org/

Larry Ferlazzo summarizes the dictogloss strategy as follows: “Dictogloss is primarily a listening and writing activity used with English Language Learners. It can certainly be done a number of different ways but, very simply-put, the teacher reads a short text, often one students are familiar with. Then, after the first time of just listening, the teacher reads it again and students write down notes of what they have heard. Next, the teacher reads it a third time and, again, the student writes down additional notes. The student then compares his/her notes with another student’s notes and they work together to develop an accurate reconstruction of the text — one that is not necessarily the exact wording, but that demonstrates its meaning accurately. Finally, the teacher reads it again and students judge how well they did.”

Recently Mr. Ferlazzo began curating an annotated collection of links to sites where English learners can practice dictation, available here: http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org/2017/07/15/the-best-sites-for-ells-to-practice-online-dictation/

Title: RTI and English Learners: 4 Considerations
Body:

From http://www.janaechevarria.com/?p=878

Jana Echevarria writes, “The following four factors should be considered during discussions and decision-making when determining instructional services for English learners. Although discussed separately, these factors are interrelated, i.e., culture and background are tightly connected as is English proficiency and high-quality teaching.”

The factors are opportunity to learn, language proficiency, background, and culture.
