Being Bilingual in Borinquen: Student Voices from the University of Puerto Rico
Edited by Alicia Pousada
Published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing

This volume opens with a basic introduction to bilingualism, with special reference to Puerto Rico. It then showcases twenty-five engaging personal histories written by Puerto Rican language professionals which reveal how they became bilingual, the obstacles faced, the benefits accrued, and the linguistic and cultural future they envision for themselves and their children. The closing chapter analyzes the commonalities of their richly detailed stories as well as the variability of their bilingual life experiences in order to inform a more nuanced language policy for Puerto Rico.

The linguistic autobiographies will resonate with bilinguals of all kinds in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, as well as those in other countries. The main message that emerges from the book is that there are many routes to multilingualism, and one-size-fits-all language policies are doomed to miss their mark.

Title: Book: Providing Health Care in the Context of Language Barriers

From http://linguistlist.org/issues/28/28-2029.html

Providing Health Care in the Context of Language Barriers: International Perspectives
Edited by Elizabeth A. Jacobs and Lisa C. Diamond
Published by Multilingual Matters

Global migration continues to increase, and with it comes increasing linguistic diversity. This presents obvious challenges for both healthcare provider and patient, and the chapters in this volume represent a range of international perspectives on language barriers in health care. A variety of factors influence the best ways of approaching and overcoming these language barriers, including cultural, geographical, political and practical considerations, and as a result a range of approaches and solutions are suggested and discussed. The authors in this volume discuss a wide range of countries and languages, and cover issues that will be familiar to all healthcare practitioners, including the role of informal interpreters, interpreting in a clinical setting, bilingual healthcare practitioners and working with languages with comparatively small numbers of speakers.

Title: Call for Proposals: International Conference on the Globalization of Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education
Body:

From http://intesda.org/globalization-second-language-acquisition-teacher-education/

The 3rd International Conference on the Globalization of Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (G-SLATE 2017) will be held Monday and Tuesday, October 30-31, 2017, at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.

As globalization advances and boundaries between countries fade away, the need to communicate in a second or multiple languages has altered the linguistic landscape. As a result, second language acquisition and foreign language teaching have progressed to the forefront of linguistics, providing a critical framework in understanding how language is acquired or learned and its pedagogical implications. Language today not only links nations but also empowers individuals toward greater upward mobility, all of which makes it an indispensable tool in modern society.

With the theme Breaking Barriers, the conference is a wonderful opportunity to share research, insights and techniques, and form professional networks in this burgeoning field of linguistics and education.

The deadline for abstracts is July 28, 2017.
