Title: Exhibition: Inventing Utamaro: A Japanese Masterpiece Rediscovered

Inventing Utamaro: A Japanese Masterpiece Rediscovered
April 8, 2017–July 9, 2017
Arthur M. Sackler Gallery
Washington, DC

In 2014, the Okada Museum of Art in Hakone, Japan, made an announcement that startled the art world. The new arts center revealed it had discovered a long-lost painting by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806), a legendary but mysterious Japanese artist.

Titled Snow at Fukagawa, the immense work is one of three paintings by Utamaro that idealize famous pleasure districts in Edo (now Tokyo). This trio reached the Paris art market in the late 1880s and was quickly dispersed. Museum founder Charles Lang Freer acquired Moon at Shinagawa in 1903. Cherry Blossoms at Yoshiwara passed through several hands in France until the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut, purchased it in the late 1950s. And Snow at Fukagawa had been missing for nearly seventy years before it resurfaced in Hakone.

For the first time in nearly 140 years, these paintings reunite in Inventing Utamaro at the Freer|Sackler, the only location to show all three original pieces. Contextualizing them within collecting and connoisseurship at the turn of the twentieth century, the exhibition explores the many questions surrounding the paintings and Utamaro himself.

Title: Words in Progress: Ancient and Byzantine Greek Dictionary Supplement
Body:

From http://www.aristarchus.unige.net/Wordsinprogress/en/Home

The WiP – Words in Progress website is an online freely consultable database that is continuously enriched. It represents an on-going supplement to the major currently used dictionaries of Ancient and Byzantine Greek and seeks to provide a scientific tool for scholars of Greek and more generally of the Ancient Greek and Latin world.

Drawing its inspiration from the over ten years of experience of PAWAG – Poorly Attested Words in Ancient Greek, of which the materials form the basis for the new website, Words in Progress aims to expand its objectives by detailing corrections and additions of many different kinds, in order to record recent progress in the updating and enlargement of lexica of Ancient and Byzantine Greek. Its primary focus of activity concerns the recording of new words, but attention is also devoted to previously unknown sources, novel acceptations and improvements of all kinds involving the entries in the main existing dictionaries.

WiP is open to collaboration and contributions from the scientific community: thus WiP welcomes any indications that would enhance the range of materials to be included in the database.

Title: Article about French Speakers in Louisiana

French language, culture alive but struggling
by Holly Duchmann
April 12, 2017

Surrounded by the moss and Cajun decorum of the Wetlands Acadian Culture Center in Thibodaux, those who attend the Cercle Francophone greet each other as family.

And though they may not be related by blood, their love of the French language brings them together each Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the museum.

Some who attend are French teachers from the area, some are visitors from Belgium, Canada or France, but many are south Lafourche and Terrebonne natives who were forced to stop speaking French as children.

Golden Meadow native Camille France said he’s been coming to the weekly gathering for five years and learned the language from his grandmother who spoke only French. When he began school, however, the teachers actively tried to stamp the language out of him.

Title: Spanish Listening Skills: While-Listening Activities
Body:

From http://www.spanishplayground.net

Jenny at the Spanish Playground website writes, “Video offers a world of language and culture, and of course we can use video to teach listening comprehension skills. To develop Spanish listening skills, we support students with while-listening tasks. Below you’ll find printable activities for several videos to try and also use as examples.

“Activities can focus on different Spanish listening skills, such as global listening or listening for specific information. With young students, I do lots of activities to develop their global listening. In other words, I want them to listen for general meaning.

“I focus on global listening because students need to get comfortable with not understanding every word. This is so important! They can’t give up and think “I don’t understand” when there are unfamiliar words. They need to build stamina, so they continue to listen for language they do understand. Developing Spanish listening skills to increase global comprehension is essential.”

Her post includes several ¡Habla Jorge! videos with comprehension questions.
