Title: Call for Proposals: Africa in the 21st Century Classroom
Body:

From https://networks.h-net.org/node/28765/discussions/174117/cfp-%E2%80%9Cafrica-21st-century-classroom%E2%80%9D-africa-network-annual

“Africa in the 21st century classroom”
September 29th-October 1st
St. Olaf College, Northfield Minnesota

Since its origins in decolonization and the Cold War, African studies has consistently had to reassert its relevance to university curricular trends and global historical forces. For many teaching African studies courses, consistent pedagogical goals have focused on deconstructing popular discourse about the world’s second largest continent, and centering African voices and experiences as vital to understanding global issues. These goals are unfinished and on-going, but how is African studies evolving to meet the demands of the 21st century classroom? What are the new opportunities and challenges to promoting the study of Africa within the liberal arts?

In higher education, declining interest and funding for the humanities and social sciences has taken its toll on fields which still dominate area studies. At the same time, universities are investing in STEM and global education in ways which could both strengthen and threaten the future of African studies. As teachers and scholars of African studies, how have we responded to these trends in the classroom and our university curricula? What pedagogical strategies best demonstrate the importance of understanding African experiences in students’ academic, personal or professional lives?

Abstracts and panel proposals are due by May 1, 2017.

Title: Article: Native American Hand Talkers Fight to Keep Sign Language Alive

Native American Hand Talkers Fight to Keep Sign Language Alive
Cecily Hilleary
April 3, 2017

In early September 1930, the Blackfeet Nation of Montana hosted a historic Indian Sign Language Grand Council, gathering leaders of a dozen North American Nations and language groups.

The three-day council held was organized by Hugh L. Scott, a 77-year-old U.S. Army General who had spent a good portion of his career in the American West, where he observed and learned what users called Hand Talk, and what is today more broadly known as Plains Indian Sign Language (PISL). With $5,000 in federal funding, Scott filmed the proceedings and hoped to produce a film dictionary of more than 1,300 signs. He died before he could finish the project.

Scott’s films disappeared into the National Archives. Recently rediscovered, they are an important resource for those looking to revitalize PISL.

…Research has shown that Hand Talk is still being used by a small number of deaf and hearing descendants of the Plains Indian cultures.

"Hand Talk is endangered and dying quickly,” said Melanie McKay-Cody, who identifies herself as Cherokee Deaf and is an expert in anthropological linguistics.

McKay-Cody is the first deaf researcher to specialize in North American Hand Talk and today works with tribes to help them preserve their signed languages. She is pushing for PISL to be incorporated into mainstream education of the deaf.

Title: Arabic Fonts

Dr. Zafer Lababidi (Assistant Director and Adviser, Middle Eastern Studies, Florida State University) recommends this site (http://www.designyourway.net/drb/34-free-arabic-fonts-available-for-download/) and this site (https://cooltext.com/Fonts-Unicode-Arabic) for access to many Arabic fonts for free! He says, "For anyone who wants to type Arabic using a calligraphic font, this link has many great options. Click on the font style and you will be directed to another page where you can download the PT Mirror. Open the file on your computer and click install. The font will be listed in your font list in Microsoft word. This works for both PCs and Macs. Diwani is one of my favorites."
