Call for Proposals: 60th Annual Meeting of the African Studies Association: "Institutions: Creativity and Resilience in Africa"
November 16-18, 2017
Chicago

The theme “Institutions: Creativity and Resilience in Africa” engages local, national, and transnational scales and multiple temporalities: past, present, future. Where and how have institutions been constructed over time? How have their goals changed? How have they helped to build or constrain knowledge, development, cultural production, and the inclusion and production of difference? What hidden discourses do they contain? Looking ahead, what innovations are emerging? The organizers anticipate papers that examine how institutions promote or undermine existing gendered, racial, ethnic, class, and generational power differentials and the trends that have influenced the way power operates in Africa. Global and internal migration, social networking, and mobile banking are some of the new dynamics that influence patterns of cultural, economic and political exchange in Africa and beyond its borders. The organizers encourage scholarship on these emergent and diverse institutions.

Deadline to receive proposals: March 15, 2017

Borderless Classrooms?: Virtual Exchanges for Language and Culture Courses
March 7, 2017

Telecollaboration tools can foster global engagement and authentic communicative contexts by putting students in direct contact with representatives of other cultures and languages. While the potential of such connections to enhance student motivation, language proficiency, and intercultural competence seems great, the startup and class-to-class costs can be daunting. In this webinar, we will draw on recent projects at Connecticut College to reflect on the benefits and challenges of virtual exchanges, and share our emerging inventory of best practices. The session will also consider how to find appropriate partners and to foster productive reciprocal relationships.

The Center for Applied Linguistics is offering two one-day workshops about dual language education. This workshop helps participants understand the fundamentals of dual language education and use that knowledge to evaluate starting or enhancing a dual language program on their campus.

Topics include exploring the research base and learning key components of dual language programming and instruction. Title: Lead with Languages National Campaign
Body:

From http://www.leadwithlanguages.org/about-us/lead-with-languages/

With language skills growing in importance in the job market, yet fewer than 1 in 10 Americans able to speak a second language, a diverse group of private and nonprofit partners spanning the education, business and foundation sectors joined forces in March 2017 to launch Lead with Languages.

Lead with Languages is an unprecedented national movement aimed at highlighting the growing importance of language skills and making language proficiency a national priority. The campaign seeks to raise awareness across the U.S. and motivate people to take action around the rapidly rising importance of language skills to a wide array of careers—and to our nation’s economy, national security and international standing.

The campaign’s ultimate goal is to inspire a new generation of Americans competent in other languages and cultures and fully equipped to compete and succeed in a global economy.
