Title: Webinar for Russian Teachers: Building Proficiency and Structural Control at the Pre-College Level
Body:

From https://actr.wildapricot.org/event-2413684

The American Council of Teachers of Russian is offering a webinar on January 24, “High School to College Articulation: Building Proficiency and Structural Control at the Pre-College Level.” This webinar will provide models for curriculum design on both a macro and micro level for grades 9-12. The framework for designing a 4-year program sets and meets proficiency targets while developing structural control at each level of instruction in a way that is both accessible and engaging for high school learners and supports strong high school to college articulation. The presenter will also discuss how Prototype AP Russian Language and Culture Exam results may be used by a teacher to inform curricular decisions. Of primary consideration will be the following issues: Should there be explicit grammar instruction, how much and when? How much English should be (and can be) spoken in class? To what degree and when should we focus on accuracy? Participants will also receive guidelines for designing a single unit of study that meets appropriate instructional goals and furthers language proficiency at each instructional level.

Title: NEH Summer Institute: Islam in Asia: Traditions and Transformation
Body:

From http://www.asdp-islaminasia.org/

Islam in Asia:  Traditions and Transformation
An NEH Summer Institute
June 12 to July 7, 2017
Honolulu, Hawaii

This Summer Institute for college and university teachers will explore Islam as an evolving system of thought and practice in South and Southeast Asia, including its impacts on social dynamics, the arts and politics. Striking a balance between the needs for both breadth and depth in engaging traditions that are culturally and historically distant, the Institute has been designed for educators from community colleges, liberal arts colleges and universities who are interested in exploring Islam’s origins in the Middle East, the history of its spread throughout South and Southeast Asia, and its place in contemporary Asia. With a stress on deep and context-rich engagement with key traditions, practices and primary texts (in translation), the four-week, multidisciplinary program will enable participants to develop curricular materials applicable across a wide range of humanities disciplines, including religion, philosophy, history, art history and literature. Applicants accepted into the program will receive a $3,300 stipend to help defray the costs of participation.

The application deadline is March 1, 2017.

Title: Report: The State of Languages in the U.S.: A Statistical Portrait
Body:

From https://www.amacad.org/content/publications/publication.aspx?d=22429

Here is a recently-published report about languages in the United States. According to the introduction, “By several measures, the United States has neglected languages in its educational curricula, its international strategies, and its domestic policies. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 60 million U.S. residents speak a language other than English at home—a number that has been growing decade by decade since the 1970s. But of the more than 230 million English speakers in the United States, very few develop proficiency in a language other than English in our schools, and the numbers of school language programs and qualified language teachers appear to be decreasing. Meanwhile, American businesses have reported a need for employees who understand the nuances of communicating with the international community, and the federal government continues to struggle to find representatives with enough language expertise to serve in diplomatic, military, and cultural missions around the world.”

Title: Modern Dance Interpretation of Anna Karenina Presented Across United States
Body:

From http://www.stagerussia.com/about-anna-karenina

Directed and choreographed by Angelica Cholina, this Vakhtangov Theatre production of Anna Karenina is a modern dance interpretation of Leo Tolstoy's classic novel, originally published in serial installments from 1875 to 1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger. Cholina strives to find the equivalent of Tolstoy's words in harmony and movement, as every gesture holds as much meaning as a word. The music of Alfred Schnittke helps to reveal the characters of the drama and their depth, together with elegance and mood corresponding to the amplitude of the novel.

The production will premier in cinemas beginning January 19th. See if it’s playing near you at http://www.stagerussia.com/map-anna-karenina

Title: National German Exam
Body:

From http://www.aatg.org/?page=NGE

The National German Exam is administered each year to over 26,500 high school students of German. The Exam, now in its 57th year, provides individual diagnostic feedback, rewards students through an extensive regional and national prize program, and creates a sense of accomplishment. Exam results provide teachers a means of comparing students in all regions of the country, as well as programmatic data provided to help inform curricular decisions.

The Exam is delivered in electronic format and has four levels, each with the same structure and content. The Level 2, 3, and 4 Exam is administered in the winter so qualifying students in the 90th percentile can apply for the AATG/PAD Study Trip Awards, a four-week study trip program to Germany. Students taking the Level 1 Exam have not had the requisite two years of language instruction to qualify for the AATG/PAD Study Trip Awards, which allows schools to administer the Level 1 Exam in the spring.

The Exam period for the Level 2, 3, and 4 Exams is December 1, 2016 to February 1, 2017 and registration begins October 1, 2016. The Exam period for Level 1 Exams is April 1 to May 1, 2017 and registration begins February 1, 2017.
