Title: Call for Chapters: Cooperation on Multilingual Writing in Global Virtual Learning Environments
Body:

From http://linguistlist.org/issues/27/27-5014.html

Call for Chapter Proposals
Cooperation on Multilingual Writing in Global Virtual Learning Environments
A book edited by Birthe Mousten, Sonia Vandepitte, Elisabet Arnó, Bruce Maylath
To be published by IGI-Global

Without the knowledge of languages, histories, cultures, sciences, media and ethics, we will not be prepared for a future in which communication is of paramount importance. However, the setup of such a network can be a great challenge and raises many theoretical and practical questions. For this book, we therefore invite contributions that can range from research or case studies drawing on participants’ experience to educational projects based on a sound rationale, involving teacher and researcher networks between writers, translators, editors, and usability testers. The contributions may cover such diverse network issues as trust, cooperation, educational issues, syllabus planning, writing and translation practices, usability testing procedures and editing and revision processes and results. Chapters may take their starting point in educational contexts but must be network-related. The guidelines that are developed and described in the chapters must reach beyond academic circles into methods and practices that can be incorporated into professional work as well as in educational contexts. Long-term network results are preferred.

Title: Blakemore Freeman Fellowships and Refresher Grants
Body:

From http://www.blakemorefoundation.org/language.html

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for one academic year of advanced level language study in East or Southeast Asia. Eligible languages are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Burmese, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese.

The Blakemore Foundation makes grants for study only at specific language programs. Please refer to the current list of approved programs.

To be eligible for a Blakemore Freeman Fellowship, an applicant must:

•    Be pursuing a professional, business, technical or academic career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language.
•    Have a college undergraduate degree.
•    Be at or near an advanced level in the language as defined in the grant guidelines. (Minimum requirement is 3 years of study of the language at college level or equivalent fluency)
•    Be able to devote oneself exclusively to full-time intensive language study during the term of the grant. Grants are not made for part-time study or research.
•    Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Superior candidates pursuing careers in fields such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), international business, accounting, law, medicine, journalism, architecture, teaching, social or NGO work, government service, and academia are encouraged to apply.

Blakemore Refresher Grants provide individuals in mid-career an opportunity to refresh their advanced Asian language skills by attending a full-time language program for a summer or semester. Refresher Grants are not a post-doctoral program; recent PhD graduates are not appropriate candidates for a Blakemore Refresher Grant.

An applicant for a Refresher Grant must be an individual in mid-career, established in academia, public service or the private sector, and a member of one of the following groups:

•    Former Blakemore Freeman Fellows
•    Professors who are teaching in an Asian field at a university or college in the United States
•    Individuals working in an Asian career field

The 2017 application cycle began on July 1, 2016, with a deadline of 11:30 p.m. EST on December 30, 2016.

Title: Lesson Plan: Peloponnesian War Propaganda: Classical Athens vs. Corinth
Body:

From http://ancientworldonline.blogspot.com/2016/12/peloponnesian-war-propaganda-classical.html

Overview: This experience will introduce high school students to the Peloponnesian War (5th c. BCE), which forever changed the political landscape of Ancient Greece and was one of the most significant wars in the history of the world. The end of the war signaled the end of the golden age of ancient Greece and paved the way for Macedonian rule. Interpreting and analyzing primary sources for both sides of the conflict, students will be asked to think about the perspective of both city- states at the start of the war. Students will take into account two different sources of evidence we use to create history: literary and archaeological evidence. Texts include in them the bias of the author, in this case Thucydides and his love of Athens. Archaeological evidence is in need of interpretation by the archaeologist or the historian who is called to make sense of the past, so the bias in this case is on the part of a person far removed from the past.
