Pronunciation in Second Language Learning and Teaching 2016
The Role of Technology in L2 Pronunciation Research and Teaching
University of Calgary
August 12, 2016 – August 13, 2016

The Pronunciation in Second Language Learning and Teaching (PSLLT) conference is an annual meeting held in North America that focuses on the exchange of research on pronunciation pedagogy and development. The theme of the 2016 conference is The Role of Technology in L2 Pronunciation Teaching and Learning. This theme is timely: In the last five years there has been an astonishing growth in smartphone apps and websites geared to second language (L2) pronunciation, or accent reduction.

In addition to the plenary, the regular refereed sessions, and the poster session, there are two other key features to this conference: a roundtable of international experts in L2 pronunciation research and technology, and a round robin session for practitioners in which several teacher educators will provide tips and strategies for evidenced-based approaches to teaching pronunciation.

Title: Resources for Endangered Languages
Body:

Your InterCom editor was lucky enough to attend the first two weeks of CoLang 2016, an institute where community language activists and linguists receive training in community-based language documentation and revitalization. Fellow CoLanger Gretchen McCulloch has compiled some useful links that she learned of at the institute, including a Passamaquoddy-Malaseet language portal that can serve as a model for others and a guidebook by Hali Dardar for heritage language community members who have the opportunity to work with speakers of their heritage language.

Title: Crowd-sourced Map of Women Who Study Ancient History
Body:

From http://awmc.unc.edu/awmc/applications/bam/bam-modules/wah/

The "manel" (= all male panel) is a prevalent occurrence within the field of ancient history. In order to combat this, the Big Ancient Mediterranean (BAM) set up a crowd-sourced .csv file so that a list of women in the field could be compiled and subsequently kept updated through the years. This list has no one author, but is rather a product of over 100+ women and men who took the time to contribute. The map, network analysis, and interface was then built by Ryan Horne, lead developer at BAM. You can use it to reach out to a female ancient historian in order to write a review, to be on a panel, to write an article, or just to read her work.

The map is available at http://awmc.unc.edu/awmc/applications/bam/bam-modules/wah/
