Title: Call for Papers: International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation
Body:

From http://icldc5.icldc-hawaii.org/

The 5th International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC), “Vital Voices: Linking Language & Wellbeing,” will be held March 2-5, 2017, at the Hawaiʻi Imin International Conference Center on the campus of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The 5th ICLDC is hosted by the Department of Linguistics and the National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

The theme of the 5th ICLDC is “Vital Voices: Linking Language & Wellbeing.” Wellbeing is a state of the body and mind that encompasses the presence of positive moods and emotions, life satisfaction, fulfillment and positive functioning, and the absence of negative emotions like anxiety. Increasingly, researchers in several fields have noted a positive correlation between language maintenance and wellbeing in endangered language communities. While the nature of the connection between language and wellbeing remains the subject of much debate, the existence of a connection is not entirely unexpected, given the range of outcomes associated with wellbeing.

Proposals for general conference papers, posters, and electronic posters are due August 31, 2016. Proposals for National Science Foundation-Supported workshops and talk story roundtable discussions are due June 30, 2016.

Go to http://icldc5.icldc-hawaii.org/ to view the full call for proposals (and click Call for Proposals at the top of the window).

Title: September Workshop with Helena Curtain
Body:

From http://www.ictfl.org/

The Illinois Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages will be starting the next school year with a workshop by Helena Curtain on September 24 in Northbrook, Illinois.

This workshop will highlight important aspects that we must consider as we develop a proficiency-focused curriculum that is deep, and rich, and engaging, for both students and teachers. How can we build a thematically-based (not topically-based) curriculum that is, at a minimum, intrinsically interesting, but that also strives to incorporate elements that are cognitively engaging and culturally connected? Come to this workshop to engage in ideas on creating curriculum and activities with more richness and depth!

The content of this workshop applies to the teaching of all levels of language learners, to all languages taught, and to pre-service teachers through university professors.

World Language Teacher Meeting
Integrating Authentic Culture Resources into World Language Instruction and Assessment
May 13, 2016
Zanesville, Ohio

An essential component of a proficiency-based world language classroom is using authentic cultural resources in the target language. In this workshop teachers will use free online tech tools to make authentic videos more comprehensible to novice and intermediate language learners, helping them acquire a deeper understanding of the target language and the content being presented. Authentic resources will also be used in the creation of reading and listening tasks that connect higher level thinking skills with depth of understanding.

Our sister Language Resource Center, the Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language, and Literacy, will be hosting its summer professional development workshop series May 31-June 10. The 2016 CERCLL Summer Workshops focus on language learning through texts across various cultural and pedagogical contexts. The diverse set of workshops share in common an emphasis on the ways in which texts in various modes (linguistic, visual, filmic, etc.) manifest conventionalized forms of speaking, meaning, and engaging in various contexts. Participants may register for the entire series, or for any combination of individual workshops.

Title: Article Describes District-Wide World Language Program in Howard County Public School System
Body:

From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/global_learning/2016/05/six_ways_to_fluency_for_world_language_learners.html

Renee A. Foose writes, “Several years ago, when the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) and community came together to develop our strategic plan, two of the resulting strategies centered on developing and providing equitable access to a robust world language instructional program at all levels. We understood that we had to rethink the HCPSS World Language Program in order to effectively prepare students to be global citizens. Howard County is now paving the way for language fluency by offering many of our students world language instruction in continuum from pre-K through high school, eliminating gaps that can occur when instruction is interrupted during a student's academic career.”

Title: Study Reveals Hawaii’s Linguistic Diversity
Body:

From http://languagemagazine.com/?p=125386

Hawaii’s Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT) recently released a 47-page report on Hawaii’s non-English speaking population. The report, based on information collected by the U.S. Census and American Community Survey data collected from 2010 to 2014, investigated residents age five and older who can speak a language other than English.

According to the American Community Survey data, around one-in-four people in Hawaii spoke a language other than English at home—a figure higher than the national average of 21%. However, considering that Hawaii is the most ethnically diverse state in the U.S., a 4.4% difference was less than the DBEDT expected.
