Title: Six Guidelines for Teaching About Religion

Six Guidelines for Teaching About Religion
by Benjamin Pietro Marcus
April 4, 2016

Teachers committed to global education increasingly understand the urgency of teaching about religion in the context of contemporary social and political life. Yet not everyone agrees—despite books and reports that explain why learning about religion is both constitutional and critically important for responsible citizenship in a diverse nation. By reminding skeptics that the world has seen an increase in social hostilities related to religion since the atrocities of September 11—including 500 percent more hate crimes against Muslims per year in the US—perhaps they will recognize that religious literacy education is a key tool for preventing and reducing religion-related violence.

Instead of repeating the why of religious literacy education, this article provides suggestions for the how. After a brief review of the best existing guidelines for teaching about religion, we will explore a lesser-known, valuable framework for teaching about religious identity.

Title: Blog Post: The Life-changing Magic of Tidying the Learning Environment
Body:

From http://www.path2proficiency.com

Your InterCom editor, who still has files of materials she used in her Spanish classes twenty years ago, cringed when she read Sharon Deering’s post on the path to proficiency blog recently. In her post, Ms. Deering challenges us as follows:

“Is it possible that our eclectic collections of “stuff” in our classrooms result in fuzzy, unfocused thinking in our planning? Do the many options of resources, activities, props, and realia we have collected over the years cause us to give in to the temptation to choose one of these things to use and they try to maneuver the learning target to fit our choice? If so, I fear we may be in danger of losing the essential focus of a proficiency-based classroom.”

She goes on, “It goes back to the idea of backward-design lesson planning. We, along with our students, determine our learning targets, decide how we will know we have reached those targets, and then plan how to get there. From our collections of stuff, we need only consider those items that can efficiently and productively help our students down the path toward their targets.”

Read the full blog post at http://www.path2proficiency.com/the-life-changing-magic-of-tidying-the-learning-environment/ and prepare to consider getting rid of some of your carefully-collected files of materials.

Course Design for TESOL: A Guide to Integrating Curriculum and Teaching
By Florin M. Mihai and Kerry Purmensky
Published by the University of Michigan Press

Course Design for TESOL offers a unique approach of integrating curriculum with teaching activities to allow language educators to utilize the text in a variety of courses in a TESOL program. Although the authors assume readers have a basic knowledge of English grammar, this textbook/resource is designed to be comprehensible to those who have not had an SLA or Applied Linguistics course. Because each language skill is discussed in detail in terms of important theories and concepts and actual teaching activities are included, the book can also be used in a Methods course or a combined Curriculum Design–Methods (or Methods and Materials) course.

A Dictionary of Slang among Chinese Youth
By Yuntong Liu
Published by Lincom Academic Publishers

With the development of information technology, young people find more and more opportunities to express themselves in this world. For them language is not only a means to express themselves, but also a means to redefine the language and world around them. Tens of thousands of new words have been created by the present-day Chinese youth and have been circulating among themselves. This dictionary provides a lexical inventory of items used by the present-day Chinese young people. It describes some 1,000 items in a clear and simple way.

This dictionary is not a dictionary in the usual sense. It tries to give a brief explanation to slang words or phrases that young people frequently use. The authors try to explain in plain English, taking both native English speakers and ESL (English as Second Language) speakers as their readers.

This dictionary targets foreign students, journalists, and others interested in China and Chinese language and culture.
