The Global Language and Culture Conference is open all teachers of World and Classical Languages grades K-12. The conference will feature a keynote speaker, job-alike sessions, and a series of workshops on a variety of topics of interest to teachers of all languages and levels.

The organizers are looking for innovative educators interested in facilitating 60-minute workshops focused on how you engage language students in your classroom and/or school. The deadline to submit is February 1.

The American Association for Corpus Linguistics (AACL) 2016 Conference will be hosted at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa on September 16-18, 2016. The conference will be held jointly with the 14th Annual Technology for Second Language Learning (TSLL) Conference organized at Iowa State.

Papers are welcome from a range of subfields in three categories:

1. Tools and methods (corpus creation, corpus annotation, tagging and parsing, visualization of large data sets, open source corpora (philosophy and practice), software development);
2. Linguistic analyses of corpora as they relate to language use (register/genre as well as lexical and grammatical variation, language varieties, parallel corpora, historical change, lexicography);
3. Application (the use of corpora in language teaching and learning).

The deadline for the submission of abstracts is March 15, 2016.

Call for Papers for Special Issue
The October 2016 issue of Reading in a Foreign Language will be a special issue with one theme:
Celebrating Linguistically Diverse Learners of St. Louis:
Responsive Research and Practice for Literacy
Edited by the new co-Editor of RFL, Cindy Brantmeier

The special issue is devoted to all aspects of literacy with English Language Learners (ELLS) and Second-Dialect (D2) learners in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

As communities across the world continue to struggle with how best to support positive educational outcomes for all students, it is important to focus on the critical fundamentals of reading and writing for learners of all backgrounds. This special issue is dedicated to the linguistically diverse learners of the St. Louis region.

Papers may cover, but are not limited to, any of the following general and specific topics of reading and writing. Local, national, and international collaborations between university researchers and educational leaders and practitioners are strongly encouraged. Submissions may include evidence based research, commentaries, informed practices, and/or directions for future research.

2.  Testing and assessment
3.  Course design and methods
4.  Reading strategies
5.  Teacher education
6.  Language policies in education
7.  Innovative programs and practices
8.  Letter-sound correspondence with early readers
9.  L1 readers of non-alphabetic orthography and L2 English

12. Cultural literacy
13. Social, economic, cultural and political factors that impact literacy
14. Culturally and linguistically responsive leadership and instruction

Questions, proposals and submissions should be directed to Cindy Brantmeier at cbrantme@wustl.edu. All submissions must be received by Professor Brantmeier no later than April 15, 2016.

Reading in a Foreign Language, is a leading scholarly international and fully refereed journal with an acceptance rate of only 10%. Because of institutional financial support, this journal is free and online so that readers across the world can have access to it. It is supported by the National Foreign Language Resource Center (NFLRC), the University of Hawai‘i College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature, and the University of Hawai‘i Department of Second Language Studies.

Contributors are encouraged to read RFL’s submission guidelines for information on submission policy. All submissions will be treated alike and after passing internal review will be sent out for blind peer review from two to three experts in the field.

The organizers invite proposal submissions that seek to provide a nuanced, rather than black-and-white, understand of instruction efficacy in SLA in light of complex questions such as: Which aspects of language are susceptible (or not) to which type of instruction to which learn(s) and at which state of learner language development?

2016 National Summer Institute: Exploring Nature & Culture in Japan
July 27-29, 2016 (online orientation in June/July)

This exciting summer institute for elementary and middle school teachers will explore how Japanese have interacted over time with the natural world. Gain content and resources to expand lessons you already teach on topics such as haiku, the environment/water, earthquakes and volcanoes, folk tales, festivals, and daily life, using Japan as a case study.

This summer institute is part of a series of thematically linked study opportunities open to all K-8 educators on the topic of nature in traditional and modern Japanese culture. Those who successfully complete this program will be given preference to participate in a heavily subsidized study tour to Japan in the summer of 2017.

This workshop will look at Chinese inventions in their historical and cultural context and the influence they had worldwide. Why was the compass invented and how was it used? Which inventions were important trade items? Is paper preferable to bamboo slats or papyrus? How? This workshop will look at inventions in their original cultural settings and how they traveled beyond China. In addition, the workshop will provide opportunities to explore hands-on classroom activities.

Inupiaq texters and Tweeters and Snapchatters can put away their "ABCs" and pull out their Achagats.

Two brothers from Kotzebue recently debuted their new app for iPhones which features the first ever Inupiaq-specific keyboard.

It's appropriately titled "Achagat"— the name of the Inupiatun alphabet.

…The Achagat app for iPhones is free and available for download on the app store.
