The Midwest Heritage Language Network is pleased to announce that we will be holding a one-day summit on heritage languages in the community at Michigan State University on April 23, 2016. The summit will consist of a keynote speaker and a series of panels to address issues related to heritage speakers and the larger community. The topics of the panels will include heritage speakers and the business community, health care, educational resources, and bilingualism and family language maintenance.

The TELL Collab will bring together world language educators to explore, model, and share effective language learning practices identified by the TELL Framework. The two-day professional learning experience will include a mixture of collaborative sessions, presentations and resource sharing for both teachers and administrators. Teachers will receive help identifying their own professional learning goals. They will also learn strategies for meeting their goals. Administrators will receive guidance on how to use the TELL Framework with their teachers.

SUNY Cortland, in affiliation with the Universidad VERITAS, is pleased to offer its Summer institute for teachers of Spanish in San Jose, Costa Rica. Participants will arrive in Costa Rica on July 2, 2016, and depart on July 16.

Participants will spend two weeks living with Costa Rican families, attending classes, and visiting sites of cultural and historic significance.

Participants have the option to earn three or six credits at the graduate level from SUNY Cortland. Three credits are earned during the component of the course that takes place in San Jose.

Students earn an additional three credits after returning to the U.S. upon satisfactory completion of the second half of the course, conducted via the Internet using Blackboard.

The application deadline is March 15, 2016.

Title: Teacher Fellowships from the Qatar Foundation International

As part of its overall mission to expand and improve the teaching of K-12 Arabic in the United States, Qatar Foundation International (QFI) is pleased to offer Teacher Fellowship grants for current or prospective K-12 teachers to become certified in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language. Fellowships provide up to $25,000 toward tuition and fees for programs that will lead to licensure or certification to teach Arabic in U.S. public or public charter schools. Fellowships are awarded to three types of applicants:

  •   Teacher candidates who are pursuing a Masters of Arts in Teaching (degree names vary by state and institution, but the result should be certification in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language);
  •   Teachers who are already certified in another discipline and are seeking an endorsement to teach Arabic; or
  •   Teacher candidates seeking certification to teach Arabic in the U.S. through any other recognized means, including undergraduate programs and alternative routes to certification.

The goal of QFI’s Teacher Fellowship program is to develop a strong cohort of highly trained teachers who will be leaders in the field of K-12 Arabic education, and the program provides participating teachers with significant professional development opportunities.

Application Deadline – February 15, 2016
