Title: Call for Papers: Writing in Non-English L2s
Body:

From http://linguistlist.org/issues/26/26-5576.html

Edited Volume on L2 writing in non-English languages
Editors: Nur Yigitoglu and Melinda Reichelt

Much of the published literature on L2 writing focuses on writing in English as a Second Language (ESL) contexts, that is, in contexts where English is the dominant surrounding language. As a result, much of what we know about L2 writing is based on conclusions drawn from research on writing in the English language. However, as a great deal of L2 writing and writing instruction is undertaken in various languages other than English, it is necessary to look at L2 writing practices in non-English languages in order to have a more comprehensive understanding of L2 writing. This special volume aims to address an imbalance in the literature by focusing on L2 writing in non-English languages.

The editors encourage a diverse range of modes of inquiry, including theoretical, historical, empirical (quantitative, qualitative and/or mixed), and/or commentaries. Submissions may include, but are not limited to, an exploration of the following topics: issues in non-English L2 writing instruction; language policies and their influences on non-English writing instruction; non-English L2 writing teacher education; challenges in teaching and learning non-English L2 writing; dominant ideologies surrounding non-English L2 writing; innovative approaches to teaching non-English L2 writing; local pedagogical non-English L2 writing teaching traditions; and attitudes towards non-English L2 writing. We welcome proposals related to other topics as well.

Submission deadline for abstracts: January 19, 2016

Title: Central Asia in World History 2016 Summer Institute
Body:

From http://slaviccenter.osu.edu/outreach/training/central-asia-world-history-2016-summer-institute

Central Asia in World History is a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for middle and high school teachers that will take place at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio Sunday, July 10-Friday, July 29, 2016. The Institute will engage teachers in a deeper understanding of how Central Asia has historically functioned as a crossroads of intercultural exchange, connecting the great civilizations on the Eurasian periphery, giving rise to world empires of its own in antiquity and the medieval era, and serving as the playing ground for the Anglo-Russian “Great Game” in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This will be done through expert presentations, analysis of primary material, both narrative and documentary, screenings and discussion of relevant films, immersion in traditional food and music of the region, and the development of unit plans for classroom use.

The application deadline is March 1, 2016.

Browning First To Use Native Language Immersion Funds
By Miriam Hall
December 14, 2015

This year, the Montana state legislature passed a bill that provides funding for public schools to start immersion programs in native languages. It’s part of an effort to preserve these fragile cultures. Across the United States, about 115 languages have been lost in the last five centuries. But so far, the Browning school system, on the southern part of the Blackfeet Reservation, is the only district to take the money.

In Browning, the immersion program started this year with kindergartners. Locals have high hopes for what it will mean for the future of this community, and its native Blackfeet language.
