Title: Integrating Culture in All Modes: A Noël Unit for Novices
Body:

From http://madameshepard.com

Here is a timely blog post describing a Christmas unit for novice French learners. The unit addresses two challenges that are likely to come up in a culture unit about Christmas: novice students don’t have many tools to talk about others, and in a diverse class, asking students to describe and compare their own December/January holiday traditions could make some students uncomfortable. Both issues are addressed by using a role-play.

Read a description of the unit and access linked authentic resources here: http://madameshepard.com/?p=1041

Here is a related article with suggestions for how to teach December holidays in an inclusive manner: http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/global_learning/2015/11/teaching_the_holidays_the_december_dilemma.html

ESEA Rewrite Could Serve as 'Huge Civil Rights' Bill for ELLs, Some Advocates Say
By Corey Mitchell
December 2, 2015

The proposed rewrite of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act could serve as a "huge civil rights protection" for the nation's 5-million plus English-language learners, some ELL advocates say.

The most significant change in the legislation would shift accountability for English-learner students from Title III (the English-language acquisition section of the ESEA) to Title I (where everyone else's accountability is).

The legislation would do more to hold all schools, not just those with significant ELL enrollment, accountable for the education of non-native English-speaking students.

Global Understanding in Action: Human Rights, Educational Access & Gender Equity
January 13-February 9, 2016
How can we engage students around global topics in meaningful ways that encourage them to become change-makers? This online course explores critical global topics – human rights, educational access, and gender equity – through the lens of social action. Through readings, videos, interactive web-based activities, and discussion forums, you will become familiar with key issues related to these topics and learn how to integrate these themes into classroom teaching and school initiatives. At the same time, you will examine case studies of how K-12 teachers have implemented curricular activities and projects to turn student learning into student action, and develop an action project to support students’ transformation from global learners to global citizens.

Title: Comprehensible Input via Infographics
Body:

From http://blog.tesol.org/

Kristen Lindahl writes, “Technology has enabled teachers to provide new, engaging ways to provide comprehensible input. Applications such as youtube.com, wherein teachers can find videos for almost any topic, to PowerPoint, which allows teachers to outline information and add graphics, video, and animation, have added dimension to comprehensible input in classrooms. Another new way to synthesize concepts to provide comprehensible input to learners is via the use of infographics. Infographics have long been used by authors and educators to analyze or show relationships via maps, graphs, time lines, and so on. Now, with many different free online tools, infographics have a new look and many different options.”

Title: Website for “Third Culture Kids”
Body:

Third Culture Kids are people who have spent a significant part of their childhoods in a culture outside of their parents’. Edutopia recently ran an article about what teachers can do to best serve third culture kids in their classrooms, which you can read here: http://www.edutopia.org/blog/integrating-third-culture-kids-classroom-lauren-owen. The article refers to a website dedicated to third culture kids, TCKids, available here: http://tckid.com/. The site serves as a platform for TCK’s to communicate from around the world, and it also provides more information about TCK’s.
