Title: Call for Proposals: Language of Business 2016
Body:

From http://www.gala-global.org/conference/

GALA 2016
New York
March 20-23, 2016

GALA's annual Language of Business conferences are advanced educational and networking events where localization leaders discuss best practices and emerging trends in translation, interpreting, localization, and language technologies. The conferences offer an open environment for localization professionals to learn, share, and network.

Conference Theme: Next-Gen Language Services: Changing Needs, Changing Models

The language services industry is experiencing a classic market disruption. The business models of yesterday simply do not fit with the demands of today. Corporations are dealing with challenges like tight budgets, short timelines, and the need for real business intelligence to develop globalization and go-to-market strategies. Vendors are coping with shrinking deadlines, new pricing models, and keeping up with technology. Both are contending with changes in consumer behaviors. And freelance linguists feel the impact of these challenges, and more. How can all stakeholders thrive amidst this change? What will next generation language services look like? Is there a way to create synergy and shared success? The organizers welcome proposals from vendor and client professionals who are willing to share new relationship models, strategies for unifying and simplifying systems, and any expert advice related to harmonizing and optimizing translation, interpreting, and localization business models.

The deadline for proposals is 30 September 2015.

Title: Book: The Sign Language Interpreting Studies Reader
Body:

From https://benjamins.com/#catalog/books/btl.117/main

The Sign Language Interpreting Studies Reader
Edited by Cynthia B. Roy and Jemina Napier
Published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company

In Sign Language Interpreting (SLI) there is a great need for a volume devoted to classic and seminal articles and essays dedicated to this specific domain of language interpreting. Students, educators, and practitioners will benefit from having access to a collection of historical and influential articles that contributed to the progress of the global SLI profession. In SLI there is a long history of outstanding research and scholarship, much of which is now out of print, or was published in obscure journals, or featured in publications that are no longer in print. These readings are significant to the progression of SLI as an academic discipline and a profession. As the years have gone by, many of these readings have been lost to students, educators, and practitioners because they are difficult to locate or unavailable, or because this audience simply does not know they exist. This volume brings together the seminal texts in our field that document the philosophical, evidence-based and analytical progression of SLI work.

Sign language approved as a foreign language in N.J. high schools
by Christopher Baxter
August 11, 2015

Taking sign language in high school will now count toward students' foreign language requirements for graduation, under a new law signed Monday by Gov. Chris Christie.

The bill (S1760) requires high schools to let students fulfill their foreign language graduation requirement by taking sign language courses instead of spoken languages like Spanish or French.

The Routledge Intermediate to Advanced Japanese Reader: A Genre-Based Approach to Reading as a Social Practice
By Noriko Iwasaki and Yuri Kumagai
Published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group

The Routledge Intermediate to Advanced Japanese Reader: A Genre-Based Approach to Reading as a Social Practice is designed for intermediate to advanced learners of Japanese and presents twenty-five authentic texts taken from a wide range of media and literary sources, which promote a deeper understanding of Japan among readers. The book is divided into ten genre-based chapters, allowing the learner to focus on the textual features relevant to that genre.

The Routledge Intermediate to Advanced Japanese Reader emphasizes reading as a purposeful social act, which requires readers to make meaning of the text by considering the authors’ choices in language (scripts, vocabulary, styles) in the text. The learners are guided to situate each text in society (for example, the author, target audience, social-cultural background related to the subject) in order to understand the social significance of reading and writing. This book aims to help learners develop the ability to critically read and write in Japanese for their own social purposes. It is suitable for both class use and independent study.
