Demotivation in Second Language Acquisition: Insights from Japan
By Keita Kikuchi
Published by Multilingual Matters

SLA literature tends to focus predominantly on what motivates language learners, but what demotivates them has not been widely discussed. This book, focusing exclusively on demotivation, will help readers to understand motivational issues from a different perspective. The aims of the work are threefold: to present the current developments of demotivation research in the field of SLA and bridge motivational theory/research and demotivation research; to promote the understanding of possible causes of demotivation; and to expand the focus of demotivation research through a reflection on current motivation theory/research and a discussion of methodological issues. The research presented in this book is situated in Japanese English-teaching contexts and will serve as a foundation for anyone wishing to better understand the causes of demotivation in SLA and to explore the topic in their own contexts.

Title: Call for Proposals: Sound to Word in Bilingual and Second Language Speech Perception
Body:

From http://www.soundtoword16.org/

The conference Sound to Word in Bilingual and Second Language Speech Perception will be held at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, from April 1-2, 2016.

The goal of the conference is to provide a venue for discussing how bilingual and second language learners perceive their two (or more) languages and how the particularities of speech perception in individuals who know more than one language influence lexical representations.

The organizers invite abstracts on topics related to speech perception and how sounds are encoded in the lexicon of bilingual (two languages from birth) or second language (additional or sequential languages) listeners. They are particularly interested in presentations that test theoretical models or proposals and and relate to the following issues:

    1. The role of phonetic detail in the bilingual lexicon and lexical activation.
    2. The role of variability in the input and its effects on lexical encoding in bilingual and second language learners.
    3. The role of orthography in speech perception and lexical activation.

Abstract submission: September 1 - December 11, 2015

Collaboration and Co-Teaching Conference: Integrated Services for English Language Learners
Molloy College, New York
October 2, 2015

Collaboration is an essential 21st century skill that all teachers need to engage in for the sake of diverse student populations. In light of the changes to CR Part 154, standalone English as a New Language classes will no longer satisfy the requirements. English learners will need to receive integrated services, which may be satisfied through coteaching. This all-day conference will explore evidence-based collaborative practices and effective coteaching models that allow for differentiation of instruction and enhance ELLs' academic and linguistic development.

Title: World Language Resident Educators Network for Ohio Teachers
Body:

From the OFLA listserv:

ODE and OFLA are working together to offer support to our new teachers (1 - 5 years) by creating a World Language Resident Educators Network.  We'd like to share the following website that has been created to support our new teachers: http://worldlanguageresed.weebly.com/

HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS WEBSITE:

1. For VETERAN world language teachers:

    a) CONNECT WITH A NEW TEACHER:  We have many "singleton" new teachers in Ohio schools who would love to connect with an experienced WL teacher.  If you would like to volunteer to be an online contact for a new teacher, click the CONNECT tab on the website.
    b)  INFO: Veteran teachers (for yourself or if you work with a new teacher) may also want to check out the TOPICS section for helpful links for Planning, Teaching, Assessing, and for the Res Ed program in general.

2.  For WL Resident Educators and new teachers in Year 1 - 5 of your career:
      a)  CONNECT:  If you would like to connect with a Veteran teacher, click the CONNECT tab on the website.
      b)  RES ED PROGRAM: All forms and information for the 4 year Res Ed program can be found on the website, by TOPIC.
      c)  RESOURCES:  There are resources to help you Plan, Teach, and Assess.
      d)  HELP:   FAQs and Tips for Teaching and RESA, as well as a Discussion Forum.
      e)  MEETINGS:  Watch for dates to be posted for upcoming regional meetings for teachers in Years 1 -5.

We hope this website will be helpful as our first step in creating a network of support for our new teachers.  Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Title: Report: International Corporate Investment in Ohio Operations
Body:

From http://development.ohio.gov/reports/reports_business_structure.htm

Why should Ohio students learn a second language? One reason is for the economic opportunity: international corporations do business in Ohio. Read a report on who is doing business and show it to administrators and policy-makers to give them another reason for supporting your language program.

The report is available at http://development.ohio.gov/files/research/B2024.pdf
