The Interactional Feedback Dimension in Instructed Second Language Learning: Linking Theory, Research, and Practice
By Hossein Nassaji
Published by Bloomsbury Publishing

This book examines current advances in the role of interactional feedback in second language (L2) teaching and learning. Drawing on recent theory and research in both classroom and laboratory contexts, the book explores a wide range of issues regarding interactional feedback and their relevance for both theory and practice, including how interactional feedback is used, processed, and contributes to L2 acquisition. This book will provide a useful resource for applied linguistics students and academics as well as language teachers and teacher educators who would like to gain insight into the role of interactional feedback and how it can be used as a means of integrating form and meaning in classroom contexts.

Early Learning and Teaching of English: New Dynamics of Primary English
Edited by Jelena Mihaljevic Djigunovic and Marta Medved Krajnovic
Published by Multilingual Matters

This book offers an insight into the dynamics and complexities of learning and teaching English as a foreign language at primary level. Taking a Dynamic Systems Theory perspective, the chapters present the findings of longitudinal research undertaken in Croatia into the development of English in young learners. The book includes both qualitative and quantitative research and provides insights into internal individual learner factors and external micro and macro contextual factors which impact English learner development. Importantly, it tackles the unique position of English in today's globalized world in detail. It therefore makes a major contribution to work on learning English by the digitalized generation and to understanding the impact of practices in the modern EFL classroom. The volume will appeal to anyone interested in new ways of researching the complex and dynamic phenomenon of the early learning of English.

From http://linguistlist.org/issues/26/26-1792.html

The International Journal of Learner Corpus Research (IJLCR) is a forum for researchers who collect, annotate, and analyze computer learner corpora and/or use them to investigate topics in Second Language Acquisition and linguistic theory in general, inform foreign language teaching, develop learner-corpus-informed tools (e.g. courseware, proficiency tests, dictionaries and grammars) or conduct natural language processing tasks (e.g. annotation, automatic spell- and grammar-checking , L1 identification). IJLCR aims to highlight the multidisciplinary and broad scope of practice that characterizes the field and publishes original research covering methodological, theoretical and applied work in any area of learner corpus research.

IJLCR features research papers, shorter research notes and reviews of books, corpora and software tools. The language of the journal is English. The journal will also publish special issues. All contributions are peer-reviewed.

IJLCR is now inviting submissions for Vol. 2 No. 1 (to be published in spring 2016).

Title: Call for Book Chapters: Teaching and Learning for Glocal Interaction
Body:

From http://linguistlist.org/issues/26/26-1768.html

You are invited to contribute a book chapter to an edited volume entitled “Teaching and Learning for Glocal Interaction: Conceptual Shifts and Contextualized Practices.” The proposed book seeks to challenge the conceptual equation of ‘English Language Teaching’ with ‘preparation for glocal interaction,’ in light of the complexity of translinguistic and transcultural negotiations of meaning in contexts around the world. This book will, as a result, explore education for glocal interaction, beyond the confines of English education.

At present, the editors are soliciting two types of contributions:

  • inquiry problematizing and approaching contextual equations of ELT with “preparation for glocal interaction,” for reasons concomitantly critical and practical
  • practice-centered accounts, from contexts around the globe, of the negotiation and implementation of contextualized education for glocal interaction

The deadline for abstract submissions is May 1, 2015.

Title: Job Interviews for Engineers
Body:

By Haley McCormick, University of Oregon graduate student in the LTS program.

The research of Louw, Derwig and Abbott (2010), makes clear the difference in interviewer perceptions of native and non-native speakers of English interviewees for an Engineering job. In general, the non-native English speakers’ first interview answers were weaker in substance due to not correctly interpreting the desired way to answer the interview questions. For example, they were asked “Why did you choose this field?” and in the non-native speakers responses, instead of personal anecdotes or reasons for being passionate about engineering, they simply said that engineering was their field, or that they had experience in the field. Other examples from this study make clear the need for non-native English speakers to focus on specific job interview skills.

This activity is based around a short sample job interview dialogue, that was found online or fabricated for the class. In line with the characteristics and behaviors extracted from the research, the activity will address some of the more pragmatically-based issues for non-native speakers attempting English interviews. The goal of this activity sequence is for the learners to be aware of the general expectations for job interview, including analyzing real interview questions and a sample mock interview. Students will also have an opportunity to practice answering interview questions in a follow-up assignment.

More on the context, rationale and procedure can be found here, and the accompanying handout here.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this activity sequence, students should be able to:

  • Identify selected linguistic and cultural features that are desirable in a successful English speaking job interview.
  • Imitate some of those features in a controlled practice of a mock or role-play interview.
