‘Turkey in Theory’ Workshop
University of Arizona
April 2-3, 2015
Deadline for submission: Feb 7, 2015

As stated in the resource:
"The new Arizona Center for Turkish Studies invites submissions from PhD students and postdocs for a workshop entitled 'Turkey in Theory' to take place at the University of Arizona on April 2-3, 2015. This ACTS workshop (with domestic US travel, lodging and meals provided) will bring together a small, invited interdisciplinary group of UA and outside scholars and writers at various stages of their careers, and a small number of UA and outside PhD students in humanities, humanities-oriented social science, and art and criticism who will be selected from those responding to this call. Note that this call is for advanced PhD students and postdocs who are not in tenure-track (or equivalent) positions."

"There is an increasing degree of mutual influence among humanities, interpretive social science disciplines, and literary and artistic worlds, and this workshop aims to explore and further these collaborations. A major aim of the workshop is to identify and elaborate emergent themes in scholarship related to Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, with a set of conversations and debates about what is on and over the horizon in Turkey- and Ottoman-related work."

"The disciplines are open, however PhD students should be ABD (candidates for PhD), have completed the research for the dissertation and now be in the process of writing their dissertation."

"Applicants should submit a paper abstract of 500 words."

Deadline for receipt of materials is February 7, 2015.

Submissions should be sent to: bsilver@email.arizona.edu

Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum (CLAC)
Engaging a Wider Community through CLAC
Hosted by Denison University
April 16-17, 2015

The Spring 2015 conference on Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum (CLAC) focuses on building relationships to serve an expanded population. At this, the4 9th conference, CLAC is reflecting on past achievements and planning future directions. Currently there is increased national attention on and support for developing international and cross-cultural perspectives in the curriculum. Programs like 100K Strong in the Americas and Generation Study Abroad create even more opportunities to spotlight the role of CLAC principles/practices in shaping the next "generation of leaders who can reach across borders" whether physical, linguistic, cultural, or curricular.

This conference is of interest to both seasoned CLAC practitioners and those in the process of implementing or developing CLAC programs at their institutions. The organizers seek a dialogue for sharing ideas and best practices in our evolving and unique field of education for global citizens.

Title: Online Video Series: Does Learning a Foreign Language Make You Smarter?
Body:

From http://englishagenda.britishcouncil.org/seminars/does-learning-foreign-language-make-you-smarter

There are many reasons to learn a language. Cognitive development is often one of the most cited ones. Learning a language is said to improve memory, attention, multitasking performance and mental health. Language learners and teachers can benefit from a deeper understanding of the mental benefits associated with learning a foreign language but this understanding should be based on sound scientific evidence rather than pop psychology. This presentation by Miguel Á. Muñoz aims to present a balanced and accessible overview of the latest research published in this area in order to dispel some myths and highlight the real cognitive benefits of learning a foreign language.

Title: 4th International Conference on Language Documentation & Conservation
Body:

From http://icldc4.icldc-hawaii.org/

The 4th International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC), "Enriching Theory, Practice, & Application," will be held February 26-March 1, 2015, at the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu. The 4th ICLDC is hosted by the Department of Linguistics and the National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

The conference program will feature two keynote talks, an integrated series of Master Class workshops and four Special Sessions on Pedagogy in Language Conservation. An optional Hilo Field Study (on the Big Island of Hawai’i) to visit Hawaiian language revitalization programs in action will immediately follow the conference (March 2-3).

The theme of the 4th ICLDC, "Enriching Theory, Practice, and Application," highlights the need to strengthen the links between language documentation (practice), deep understanding of grammatical structure (theory), and methods for teaching endangered languages (application). At this conference, we intend to focus on language documentation as the investigation of grammar and linguistic structure, on the one hand, and the development of that investigation into sound pedagogy for endangered languages, on the other.
