Title: Collection of Sub Lessons for German Teachers
Body:

German teacher and AATG listserv user Emily Combs has put together a collection of lesson plans that a substitute teacher can use when you are absent from your class, and she has posted them on this website: https://sites.google.com/site/combssubstitutelessons/home

Plans are organized by type or topic (travel films, culture, current events, Christmas, etc.) and are structured so that when you have to miss school, they are ready to be used with no additional preparation from you.

Title: Ideas for Teaching Young Learners To Talk about Family
Body:

From http://caltalk.cal.org

Recently an Improving Early Language Learning listserv user asked,

"Today I was looking for any new ideas with teaching family - we teach it in 1st grade along side traditions and use 'cuadros de familia' as a resource. [W]e want to bring it back in 4th grade but need a fresh way to do so - does anyone have another authentic resource or different spin on teaching family?"

See her fellow listserv users' suggestions by following the thread at http://caltalk.cal.org/read/messages?id=58925#58925

Title: Vocabulary Square Activity
Body:

From http://utopiagraduada.wordpress.com

Here is an activity to help reinforce vocabulary by going in depth with each word: draw a picture, use it in a sentence, write an synonym and an antonym, find a definition, and define it in your own words. Read a description of the activity and download a Spanish-language worksheet to accompany it at http://utopiagraduada.wordpress.com/2014/11/25/cuadros-de-vocabulario-una-actividad-para-profundizar-en-el-vocabulario/

Teaching learning strategies to ELLs: What, why, when, how
Erick Herrmann
November 18, 2014

"Learning strategies — those strategies an individual uses to help them learn, retain and retrieve information — have commonly been taught explicitly to students in classrooms over the past decade, and surely were present long before that. The term strategies is often used to describe instructional strategies, but to be clear, we will refer to "learning strategies" as those strategies that students use, and "techniques" as instructional activities the teacher uses to teach.

"...The purpose of teaching learning strategies, of course, is to give students the tools they need to be independent, effective, efficient and strategic learners. This requires teaching students what the strategy is, when and why it is used, and the opportunity to learn to practice the strategy independently."
