Title: 2nd Annual 2015 ACTFL Proficiency Training Summer Institute

The ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) Assessment Workshop is a four-day professional development workshop designed to introduce language educators to the Oral Proficiency Interview, the ACTFL rating scale and the techniques for conducting and rating oral proficiency interviews. In daily plenary presentations, participants address general concepts and strategies for oral proficiency testing. Two sessions of OPI training will be held this coming summer at BYU from June 9-12, 2015 and UMD from June 22-25, 2015.

We hope that the website will develop into a networking and informational hub building on earlier and current research. As a first step, we would like to invite you to send us news and information regarding:

Arabic Collections Online (ACO) is a publicly available digital library of public domain Arabic language content. Funded by New York University Abu Dhabi, this mass digitization project aims to expose up to 15,000 volumes from NYU and partner institutions over a period of five years. NYU and the partner institutions are contributing all types of material—literature, business, science, and more—from their Arabic language collections. ACO will provide digital access to printed books drawn from rich Arabic collections of prominent libraries.

Title: Central Asian Language Materials from the Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region

The Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region is one of CASLS' sister Language Resource Centers. Like us, they are entering a new grant period. Here are their plans for the coming four years:

"We will use these funds to continue preparing high quality language teaching materials - including textbooks, multimedia materials, smartphone apps, etc. - for Central Asian languages. In alphabetical order, the languages with which we proposed to have significant work on include Azerbaijani (Azeri), Dari, Kazakh, Kyrgyz (Kirghiz), Mongolian, Pashto, Tajiki, Tibetan, Turkmen, Uyghur (Uigur), and Uzbek, all of which are on the Priority Language list of the US Department of Education. We will also do significant research on the acquisition and teaching of Central Asian languages by English-speaking learners. We will also deepen outreach efforts for all Central Asian languages and cultures (even those that are rarely heard in the US, such as Buryat (Buriat), Chuvash, Shugni, Tatar, Sakha/Yakut, etc.), including efforts to bring Central Asian language instruction to several community colleges and minority serving institutions. Finally, we are also pleased to announce that we are already developing online courses for languages of the Central Asian region, and will intensify these efforts in this grant cycle."

Title: 2015 National Chinese Language Conference – Call for Student Calligraphy

Language Conference (NCLC) will be held from April 16–18, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to highlighting luminaries from the fields of policy, education, arts and culture, and business, the conference also looks for opportunities to feature student achievements. NCLC15 is calling for student calligraphy of "全美中文大会" to be featured on conference materials. Interested students may send a high-resolution scan of their calligraphy work of ""全美中文大会" to yzheng@asiasociety.org no later than January 1. Please also include the following information: Student's first and last name; school name and state; and grade level.

Medieval Japan & Medieval Europe: Compare & Contrast

For centuries medieval Japan and medieval Europe have been compared. However, they represented fundamentally different societies; knights and samurai were born under different circumstances, and samurai political power evolved along a markedly different path into shapes and forms diverging greatly from those of European lordship. By exploring more deeply the history of medieval Japan, we will clarify contrasts, and bring similarities that did exist into focus.

Especially for educators of grades 6-12.
