Title: Nominations Open for Awards in Slavic and East European Languages
Body:

From the SEELANGS listserv:

As Past President of AATSEEL [American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages] (2013-14), I am happy to invite AATSEEL nominations in the following five award categories:

1. Excellence in Teaching (Secondary);
2. Excellence in Teaching (Post-Secondary);
3. Distinguished Service to AATSEEL;
4. Outstanding Contribution to the Profession;
5. Outstanding Contribution to Scholarship.

Is there a colleague who has made a major impact on your research, teaching, or participation in the profession? Someone who has made a major contribution to AATSEEL over the years? A teacher who had a strong influence on you during your student years? A departmental colleague whose contribution has been invaluable? Now is a moment when you could propose that person for an AATSEEL award.

If you would like to nominate someone, please take the following two steps by 15 September 2014:
1. Check http://www.aatseel.org/about/awards_2005167/ to determine whether your candidate has already won *in that category*;
2. Send 5 things to condee@pitt.edu by 15/IX-14: nomination, affiliation, email, prize category; testimonial/rationale.

The candidate must be a member of AATSEEL to accept the award. We encourage recipients to be present at the award ceremony (January 8-11, 2015 at the Renaissance Harbourside in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada).

We welcome nominations in smaller fields, international nominations, and other perceived professional lacunae. I look forward to your nominations.

Best wishes,
Nancy Condee
AATSEEL Past President (2013-2014)

Condee, N. [SEELANGS] Invitation for nominations (AATSEEL awards): deadline 15 September. SEELANGS listserv (SEELANGS@LISTSERV.UA.EDU, 29 Jul 2014).

Title: Blog Post: Writing as Interpersonal Communication on the AP
Body:

From http://senorab1972.wordpress.com

Teacher and blogger Wendy Brownell writes,

Title: Bilingual Education Could Make a Comeback in California
Body:

From http://edsource.org/2014/bilingual-education-could-make-a-comeback/65474#.U9vpTkjPblo

Bilingual education could make a comeback
By Lillian Mongeau
July 29, 2014

After nearly two decades, bilingual education in California could stage a resurgence if the state Senate approves a bill in August that would put the issue on the ballot in November 2016.

Since the passage of Proposition 227 in 1998, schools have been banned from offering classes taught in a language other than English without express permission from parents, among other requirements. The initiative, which passed with 61 percent of the vote, overhauled a system where the default assignment for English learners was a class taught in their native language.

…The new bill, SB 1174, which is currently undergoing revisions, would not be a return to the old system, said Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, the bill’s author. English-language instruction or a quick transition of one or two years to English-language instruction would remain the default for English learners. The bill would remove barriers to offering instruction in a language other than English. Since it would undo some of the provisions of Prop. 227, it would need to be placed before voters.

The resulting changes to the education code would allow schools to more easily offer either traditional bilingual programs or dual language immersion programs, which are meant to create fluency in two languages regardless of the student’s home language.
