The dates for the MaFLA Summer Institute are August 8-10, 2014
The location for the 2014 Summer Institute is Lasell College, Newton, MA.
During the summer months, MaFLA members can participate in the annual Summer Institute/Immersion Workshops. These workshops provide participants an opportunity to spend up to three days in an immersion setting to enhance their language and cultural skills as well as learn of new pedagogies and connect with colleagues.

The Goethe-Institut Los Angeles and the American Cinematheque will celebrate the 8th edition of German Currents on October 9th -12th, 2014 at the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
German Currents 2014 - 8th Annual Festival of German Film Los Angeles will begin with an opening film and gala on the evening of Thursday, October 9th, 2014. Continuing through Sunday, October 12th, German Currents 2014 will present a varied selection of current German cinema; including features, documentary, and short films, as well as a family/youth film.

Chris Aldrich writes, “I’ve long been a student of the humanities (and particularly the classics) and have recently begun reviewing over my very old and decrepit knowledge of Latin. It’s been two decades since I made a significant study of classical languages, and lately (as the result of conversations with friends like Dave Harris, Jim Houser, Larry Richardson, and John Kountouris) I’ve been drawn to reviewing them for reading a variety of classical texts in their original languages. Fortunately, in the intervening years, quite a lot has changed in the tools relating to pedagogy for language acquisition.”

Title: California Adopts First English Framework Based on Common Core

“… [T]he California State Board of Education adopted the English Language Arts/English Language Development Framework for California Public Schools (Framework). This is the first time in the nation that a state has adopted dual guidelines in one publication for both English language arts and English language development.
“…The Framework provides teachers guidance to teach the standards, which describe the knowledge, concepts, and skills that students should acquire at each grade level. The Framework covers the implementation of the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects, as well as the new California English Language Development Standards.”
