Title: Dartmouth Foreign Language Classes Embrace Twitter
Body: From http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Dartmouth-foreign-language-classes-embrace-Twitter-4569474.php Dartmouth foreign language classes embrace Twitter By HOLLY RAMER June 2, 2013 Foreign language professor Tania Convertini is thrilled to catch her Dartmouth College students complaining about homework or upcoming tests. She's not eavesdropping — she's reading their tweets, written in Italian and assigned as part of an effort to immerse students in the language 140 characters at a time. Convertini, director of Dartmouth's French and Italian language program, requires students to follow prominent Italian individuals, companies and organizations on Twitter and to tweet among themselves in Italian. And while the approach is a nod to the younger generation's obsession with smartphones, Convertini says she is not embracing technology just for technology's sake. Instead, she wants put students in charge of their learning, expose them to authentic language in real-life, real-time situations and create a community that extends beyond the classroom. Title: Article: International Experiences Benefit Pre-Service Teachers
Body: From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/global_learning/2013/06/international_experiences_benefit_pre-service_teachers.html International Experiences Benefit Pre-Service Teachers By Anthony Jackson June 5, 2013 Why should future teachers go abroad? In addition to improving their employment prospects, international experiences help educators develop key skills. Laura Stachowski presented research on former participants of the Cultural Immersions Projects, which she directs at Indiana University. During their student teaching placements in nearly 20 countries, former participants reported that they developed leadership, public speaking, cross-cultural communication, and problem-solving skills. Current research supports that pre-service teachers begin to develop global competency skills when they are exposed to other cultures and provided meaningful personal and professional experiences abroad. These skills are crucial to educators in our classrooms. In 2008, 20% of students in American K-12 schools spoke a language other than English at home, and minorities are projected to make up 55% of the population by 2050. Body: From http://www.pe.com/local-news/san-bernardino-county/san-bernardino-county-headlines-index/20130604-san-bernardino-cal-state-to-teach-serrano-language.ece SAN BERNARDINO: Cal State to teach Serrano language June 4, 2013 The Native American language of Serrano, which was dying out as fewer and fewer native speakers remained, has been given a lifeline through the work of tribal people and Cal State San Bernardino. The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians signed an agreement with Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, May 24, to have the Serrano language taught at the university by San Manuel linguists and a tribal elder through the world languages and literature department. Under the agreement, San Manuel’s Serrano Language Revitalization Project staff will teach the Serrano language course series — Serrano 101, 102 and 103 — at the university during the 2013-14 academic year, in collaboration with Ernest Siva of the Dorothy Ramon Learning Center. The course will cover the language, history and culture of the Serrano people. Along with Cal State students, tribal citizens will be able to take the course series through the university’s College of Extended Learning and receive college credit. Title: Phonemica: Collecting Spoken Stories in All Varieties of Chinese
Body: From http://www.tealeafnation.com/2013/05/trying-to-save-the-chinese-language-from-itself Phonemica, or xiangyinyuan, is a project to record spoken stories in every one of the thousands of varieties of Chinese in order to preserve both stories and language for future generations. Each Phonemica entry includes a story excerpted from a long dialogue. This method allows for a natural presentation of the interviewee’s speech. Phonemica presents the recordings as well as ethnographic information about the interviewees on an interactive map. A story told by a Sichuanese girl about her negative impressions of Shanghai can be accessed with one click, making Phonemica’s interface more accessible than most academic research on Chinese linguistics. Read a fuller description of this resource at http://www.tealeafnation.com/2013/05/trying-to-save-the-chinese-language-from-itself Phonemica is available at http://phonemica.net
