Title: Book: The Strategy Factor in Successful Language Learning
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847699404 The Strategy Factor in Successful Language Learning By Carol Griffiths Published by Multilingual Matters Summary: This book addresses fundamental questions regarding the relationships between successful language learning and strategy use and development according to learner, situational or target variables. It considers strategy effectiveness from an individual point of view and discusses pedagogical issues, especially relating to teacher perceptions and training, classroom and learner factors, methodology and content. The book begins by discussing underlying theoretical issues and then presents evidence from empirical studies; in addition to presenting a quantitative view, the book also takes a qualitative look at strategy use by individuals. Rather than focusing on strategies divorced from the 'real world' of the classroom, this book explores the issues from the teaching/learning point of view. Title: Book: Linguistics for Intercultural Education
Body: From http://benjamins.com/#catalog/books/lllt.33/main Linguistics for Intercultural Education Edited by Fred Dervin and Anthony J. Liddicoat Published by John Benjamins Publishing Company Summary: The issue of intercultural learning has been tackled, amongst others, in the fields of education, language education and applied linguistics. In spite of the extensive literature on the subject, there is still much which needs to be done to address the ways in which linguistics itself can contribute to intercultural education. The 8 chapters by internationally-renowned scholars highlight different ways of using it both in the classroom and in researching intercultural education. The following approaches are covered: Critical Discourse Analysis, Énonciation, Conversation Analysis and Pragmatics. The introduction to the volume also offers a useful and comprehensive survey of the debates around the polysemic notion of the ‘intercultural’. The book will appeal to an international readership of students, scholars and professionals across a wide range of disciplines, interested in making intercultural education more effective. Title: Call for Panel Reviewers for Administration for Native Americans Language Grant
Body: From http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ana/grants/ana-objective-panel-review Each year, ANA convenes panels of experts to objectively analyze and score eligible grant applications. These scores are used to rank eligible applications which help ANA decide which eligible tribes or native organizations will receive funds. Being a panel reviewer is an integral part of ANA’s funding process and affords participants the opportunity to have a significant impact in native communities. The panel for ANA Language Grants will be June 21-28, 2013 and new reviewers will receive training prior to the panel. They will review 7 applications each, and be compensated. All reviews will be conducted remotely, with panels meeting via teleconference, so no travel will be involved.
