Title: Using SoundCloud in a Language Course
Body: From http://www.freetech4teachers.com From Richard Byrne’s blog: SoundCloud is a free tool for creating and sharing sound tracks. Today, I showed it to some teachers at the Bancroft School in Massachusetts. When I showed the option for inserting text comments into the sound tracks a teacher spoke up with an idea for using Sound Cloud in a world languages course. The suggestion the teacher made was to have students record spoken tracks on Sound Cloud and share them with her. Then she could use the comment feature to provide feedback that is tied directly to each student's recording. The comments could be tied to the exact second at which a student pronounces something incorrectly, uses the wrong verb form, or to praise a student for pronouncing a new word particularly well. Title: Book: Multilingual Individuals and Multilingual Societies
Body: From http://benjamins.com/#catalog/books/hsm.13 Multilingual Individuals and Multilingual Societies Edited by Kurt Braunmüller and Christoph Gabriel Published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company Description: The 25 contributions of this volume represent a selection from the more than 120 papers originally presented at the International Conference on “Multilingual Individuals and Multilingual Societies” (MIMS), held in Hamburg (October 2010) and organized by the Collaborative Research Center “Multilingualism” after twelve years of successful research. It presents a panorama of contemporary research in multilingualism covering three fields of investigation: (1) the simultaneous and successive acquisition of more than one language, including language attrition in multilingual settings, (2) historical aspects of multilingualism and variance, and (3) multilingual communication. The papers cover a vast variety of linguistic phenomena including morphology, syntax, segmental and prosodic phonology as well as discourse production and language use, taking both individual and societal aspects of multilingualism into account. The languages addressed include numerous Romance, Slavic and Germanic varieties as well as Welsh, Hungarian, Turkish, and several South African autochthonous languages. Title: Book: How to Train Language Teacher Trainers
Body: From http://www.c-s-p.org/Flyers/How-to-Train-Language-Teacher-Trainers1-4438-4023-8.htm How to Train Language Teacher Trainers Editor: Pierangela Diadori Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing Description: In recent decades, considerable European investment has been devoted to the training of language assistants, full-time teaching staff and mentors, while the new figure of the professional “language teacher trainer” (LTT) has emerged. It is becoming increasingly important that future LTT’s are not simply more expert teachers, or scholars competent in the various relevant disciplines, but professionals who are aware of their role, who know the development of teacher training in Europe and beyond, and who are able to compare various experiences in different training contexts. This volume is aimed at LTT’s who wish to become aware of the main issues, tools and research now available for their daily practice and professional role, and for lecturers who teach prospective language teachers. Language teachers with long experience might also find useful information on how they can develop into LTT’s. The book also offers an overview of recent European projects that could be relevant to principals of language departments who are involved in the assessment and performance management of their staff. Finally, the volume contains research suggestions for academic and PhD students who are investigating current issues in language teaching methodology, teacher training, lifelong learning and professional development. Title: Call for Papers: Language Acquisition/ International Journal of Bilingualism
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/23/23-3727.html Abstracts are invited for the annual thematic issue of the International Journal of Bilingualism (IJB) to be published in March 2015. The topic of the proposed thematic issue is ''Cross-linguistic aspects in child L2 acquisition'' and intends to bring together contributions from researchers examining the acquisition of interface and syntax-only phenomena in child L2 learners from a cross-linguistic perspective and/or by using different methodologies (production, off-line/on-line comprehension). This thematic issue will seek to comprise articles investigating how target language (TL) properties influence child L2 acquisition, whether acquisition of different kinds of interface conditions influences transfer differently, how the acquisition pattern can be mediated by external factors such as age of onset (AoO), length of exposure (LoE) to the L2 and quality of input, and how transfer can interact with TL properties to give rise to different acquisition patterns cross-linguistically. Finally, by comparing different modalities such as production, off-line and on-line comprehension, the issue will address possible (a)symmetries between production and comprehension, and it will investigate the nature of the potential production problems in L2 children with different AoO and LoE. Call deadline: October 15, 2012 See the full call for papers at http://linguistlist.org/issues/23/23-3727.html
