Title: Book: Language and Mobility
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847697639 Language and Mobility: Unexpected Places By Alastair Pennycook Published by Multilingual Matters Summary: This book looks at language in unexpected places. Drawing on a diversity of materials and contexts, including farewell addresses to British workers in colonial India, letters written from parents to their children at home, a Cornish anthem sung in South Australia, a country fair in rural Australia, and a cricket match played in the middle of the 19th century in south India, this book explores many current concerns around language, mobility and place, including native speakers, generic forms, and language maintenance. Using a series of narrative accounts – from a journey to southern India to eating cheese in China, from playing soccer in Germany to observing a student teacher in Sydney – this book asks how it is that language, people and cultures turn up unexpectedly and how our lines of expectation are formed. Title: Book: Language and Learning in Multilingual Classrooms
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847697196 Language and Learning in Multilingual Classrooms: A Practical Approach By Elizabeth Coelho Published by Multilingual Matters Summary: This book is a research-based practical guide for educators who work with students whose linguistic and cultural background is different from their own. Illustrated with many practical examples of classroom activities, projects, and teaching strategies, the book is also an introduction to immigrant education for school administrators and educational planners in communities or regions that are in the process of developing plans and programs for newcomer students. Although the focus is on first-generation immigrant children, many of the recommended approaches and instructional strategies described in this book can be used or adapted for use with second-generation children and historical linguistic and cultural minorities, such as children from Aboriginal communities in North America or children of Roma background in Europe. Title: Call for Book Chapter Proposals - Agency and SLA
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/23/23-2916.html CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Submission Deadline: September 15, 2012 Interdisciplinary Approaches to Theorizing and Analyzing Agency and Second Language Learning (Tentative title) Edited by Dr. Ping Deters (Seneca College, Ontario, Canada) Dr. Xuesong “Andy” Gao (University of Hong Kong) Dr. Elizabeth R. Miller (University of North Carolina at Charlotte) Dr. Gergana Vitanova (University of Central Florida) Second language researchers are increasingly treating agency as a fundamental construct in understanding language learning processes and language learner identities. This growing emphasis on learner agency reflects the broader shift in second language research to exploring learners as complex individuals whose language use, meaning making and actions are mediated by their social and cultural worlds. However, leading scholars in the field have commented on the lingering under-theorization of agency and the concomitant lack of clarity in defining agency that characterizes much of the current research. Others have noted the difficulty of establishing sound analytic procedures for investigating agency empirically. In addition, the difficulty of translating theory into practice continues to challenge second language instructors. The editors are seeking proposals for chapters that address the construct of agency through theoretical and empirical research in second language studies.
