Title: Editorial: United States Needs More Multilingualism
Body: From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/global_learning/2011/11/you_know_the_joke_and_its_not_funny.html You Know the Joke, And It's Not Funny By Anthony Jackson November 30, 2011 What do you call someone who speaks two languages? Bilingual. What do you call someone who can speak one language? American. It's an old joke that's no longer funny. U.S. national security and American businesses alike have called for greater language capacity among Americans, but schools have not been able to help meet this need. In this rapidly changing and increasingly global economy, there is a growing need for workers with the skills to work across different languages and cultures. In fact, according to the Committee for Economic Development, a non-profit organization of more than 200 business leaders and university presidents, "to compete successfully in the global marketplace, both U.S.-based multinational corporations as well as small businesses, increasingly need employees with knowledge of foreign languages and cultures to market products to customers around the globe and to work effectively with foreign employees and partners in other countries." Beyond the clear economic and professional advantages of achieving facility in a language other than English, language learning also has clear cognitive benefits for students of all ages. Title: Madison Schools' Dual-language Program Prompts Concerns
Body: From http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/education/local_schools/madison-schools-dual-language-program-prompts-concerns/article_5754a16e-19b6-11e1-9e0a-001cc4c002e0.html Madison Schools' dual-language program prompts concerns by Matthew DeFour November 28, 2011 Students in the Madison School District's dual-language immersion program are less likely than students in English-only classrooms to be black or Asian, come from low-income families, need special education services or have behavioral problems, according to a district analysis. School Board members have raised concerns about the imbalance of diversity and other issues with the popular program. As a result, Superintendent Dan Nerad wants to put on hold expansion plans at Hawthorne, Stephens and Thoreau elementaries and delay the decision to the spring on how to expand the program to La Follette High School in 2013. As part of a year-long service-learning project, the local Spanish students are volunteering as translators at the Elsmere-based non-profit that provides local, needy families with food, clothing and household items.
