Title: Book: Processes and Process-Orientation in Foreign Language Teaching and Learning
Body: From http://www.degruyter.com/cont/fb/sk/detailEn.cfm?id=IS-9781614510093-1 Processes and Process-Orientation in Foreign Language Teaching and Learning Edited by Wai Meng Chan, Kwee Nyet Chin, Masanori Nagami, and Titima Suthiwan Published by De Gruyter Description: There can be no products without processes. Though this statement may seem to be no more than an overused generalization, it encapsulates the undoubted importance of processes and process-oriented approaches in language teaching and learning. In foreign language education in recent decades, researchers and practitioners alike are increasingly focusing their attention on: 1) the learner as the active subject of learning and the internal processes that constitute his/her learning leading to the development of communicative competence; 2) teaching approaches, curricula and materials that reflect this view of language learning; and 3) other factors such as the sociocultural context, social interactions and discourse, and individual learner characteristics and differences. The theme of this book reflects this paradigm shift, and the papers included here from the disciplines of foreign language education and second language acquisition provide vital insights into processes in curriculum planning, teaching methodology, teacher education and professional development, language acquisition, language discourse, classroom instruction and interactions, the development of language skills and learning strategies, and language learning motivation. Title: Book: Handbook of Generative Approaches to Language Acquisition
Body: From http://www.springer.com/education+%26+language/linguistics/book/978-94-007-1687-2?changeHeader Handbook of Generative Approaches to Language Acquisition Edited by Jill de Villiers and Tom Roeper Published by Springer Description: Modern linguistic theory has been based on the promise of explaining how language acquisition can occur so rapidly with such subtlety, and with both surprising uniformity and diversity across languages. This handbook provides a summary and assessment of how far that promise has been fulfilled, exploring core concepts in acquisition theory, including notions of the initial state, parameters, triggering theory, the role of competition and frequency, and many others, across a variety of syntactic topics that have formed the central domains of investigation and debate. These topics are treated from the unique perspective of central actors in each domain who have helped shape the research agenda. The authors have presented a summary of the data, the theories under discussion, and their own best assessments of where each domain stands. Providing as well the agenda for future work in the field showing both particular needs and general directions that should be pursued in the coming decades. Title: Webinar: Assessing Writing
Body: From http://larc.sdsu.edu/events/webinars Writing Assessments Presented by Sara C. Weigle Date: Thursday, December 8, 2011 Time: 12:30 – 1:40 pm Los Angeles Time (3:30 – 4:40 pm New York Time) Location: Online Webinar (Free) The assessment of student writing is an essential task for language teachers, and yet many graduate programs do not require students to take a course in assessment or evaluation, and courses on teaching writing often devote only a limited amount of time to the discussion of assessment. Furthermore, teachers frequently need to prepare their students for externally mandated large-scale writing assessments, and thus they need to have an understanding of the uses and misuses of such tests. In this webinar we will explore the essential considerations in classroom and large-scale writing assessments. Topics to be discussed include designing tasks for writing assessment, scoring rubrics, computer scoring of writing, and portfolio assessment.
