Title: Japan-America Collegiate Exchange Travel Program
Body: From http://www.cgp.org/announcements/undergraduate-funding-initiative The Center for Global Partnership is pleased to announce a new initiative directed at undergraduate students, the Japan-America Collegiate Exchange Travel Program. The goal of this new grant program is to facilitate exchange and understanding between Japan and the U.S. by providing travel funds for U.S. undergraduates to go to Japan. Instructors teaching Japan-related courses at U.S.-based universities and colleges are invited to complement course material through short-term travel of their own design. This new system makes it easier to manage their inventory of over 10,000 print and audiovisual materials. Furthermore, users can quickly search through the entire catalog for specific items. Body: From http://www.courant.com/community/suffield/hc-suffield-latin-0925-20110923,0,1667094.story Latin Vanishes From Some High Schools, But Strongholds Remain By KIM VELSEY September 23, 2011 After Suffield High School's Latin teacher retired in June, the district struggled in vain to find a full-time replacement for the nine students — out of the high school's nearly 900 — still enrolled in Latin. A few weeks after school started, the district discovered that one of its third-grade teachers was certified in Latin and could hold office hours and a Saturday class. But the independent study will only be offered to students already in the program. If Suffield High eliminates Latin, it will follow in the footsteps of many other schools in north central Connecticut — both Enfield high schools and Suffield Academy, a private school, are phasing out their programs; Windsor Locks doesn't have a program. But nil desperandum, never despair, say Latin enthusiasts. The language, though officially dead, has managed to survive for millennia. While it fades in some pockets of the state, it continues to thrive in others, like Glastonbury and West Hartford High schools, the Norwich Free Academy and Edwin O. Smith High in Storrs, said Roger Travis, an associate professor of Classics at UConn. Title: Free Online Course in Greek: EU’s GLOSSA Project
Body: The European language education project GLOSSA has created C1 & C2 (advanced and proficiency level CEFR) Greek courses as part of their project. The courses will run online from November 2011 until May 2012. There is no cost for participation. The courses will suite students or teachers of Greek that are currently at B2 level and want to expand their skills. This is a great opportunity for students of Greek to build their language skills without risk or cost, and help a European project at the same time. You will need to complete the registration form by the end of October 2011 and verify your level through an online test. Details of the test will be sent to via an email when you register. Title: Noah Comprende: New PBS Program
Body: From http://www.pbs.org/teachers/noah Noah Comprende is designed to teach Spanish to children ages six to eight through animated videos with embedded games that help build vocabulary. In each three-minute video, a misunderstanding launches a comic misadventure. Each video features opportunities for kids to roll their cursor over objects on the screen to hear the Spanish translation. Three different vocabulary-driven, arcade-style games reinforce learning. Leveling and racing against the clock encourage replayability and repeated exposure to vocabulary. Another game on the website, How Do You Say…?, helps kids learn common expressions in Spanish. Aguayo is a veteran teacher in the Creighton Elementary School District in central Phoenix as well an immigrant from northern Mexico who learned English as an adult and taught it as a second language. Confronted about her accent by her school principal several years ago, Ms. Aguayo took a college acting class, saw a speech pathologist and consulted with an accent reduction specialist, none of which transformed her speech. As Ms. Aguayo has struggled, though, something else has changed. Arizona, after almost a decade of sending monitors to classrooms across the state to check on teachers’ articulation, recently made a sharp about-face on the issue. A federal investigation of possible civil rights violations prompted the state to call off its accent police.
