Title: Expansion Grants vs. Recession Cuts: A Balancing Act in Language Education
Body: From http://nclrc.org Expansion Grants vs. Recession Cuts: A Balancing Act in Language Education By Leah Mason October 2009 The relationship between government and language education is one which we don’t often reflect upon, yet one which significantly affects educators and classroom goals. The government utilizes multilingual individuals in a variety of roles across all agencies and supports language education efforts through programs and initiatives covering K-16 education and beyond. A recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report entitled Comprehensive Plan Needed to Address Persistent Foreign Language Shortfalls was issued in September 2009 outlining the deficiencies of Foreign Service officers in language-designated positions. This timely report gives cause for language educators to step back and reflect upon changes in language education within the K-16 system, a primary pipeline to government positions requiring linguistic proficiency. Title: Article: Tall Pine Driven to Preserve the Nipmuc Language
Body: From http://www.masslive.com/hampfrank/republican/index.ssf?/base/news-23/125610943490920.xml&coll=1 Tall Pine driven to preserve the Nipmuc language By BOB DATZ October 21, 2009 Growing up in Sturbridge, the language was around David White at tribal ceremonies in which is father and uncle were particularly active. But girls and buddies were his major interests, even though he was taking language classes and spoke a little starting at age 11. "I didn't really get serious about it until I was a young adult," White said. Then, before he died five years ago, George (Little Turtle) Munyan, who served as language teacher and a spiritual leader for the tribe, asked White to consider carrying on his teaching. "So it wasn't really a choice." Read the full article at http://www.masslive.com/hampfrank/republican/index.ssf?/base/news-23/125610943490920.xml&coll=1

Title: Article: In Chinatown, Sound of the Future Is Mandarin
Body: From http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/22/nyregion/22chinese.html?_r=2&ref=nyregion In Chinatown, Sound of the Future Is Mandarin By KIRK SEMPLE October 21, 2009 Cantonese, a dialect from southern China that has dominated the Chinatowns of North America for decades, is being rapidly swept aside by Mandarin, the national language of China and the lingua franca of most of the latest Chinese immigrants. The change can be heard in the neighborhood’s lively restaurants and solemn church services, in parks, street markets and language schools. It has been accelerated by Chinese-American parents, including many who speak Cantonese at home, as they press their children to learn Mandarin for the advantages it could bring as China’s influence grows in the world.
