Title: Arizona Bill Would Give Flexibility for Teaching English Learners
Body:

From https://azednews.com/education-advocates-testify-on-english-language-learners-bill/

Advocates, Senate Education Committee support ELL instruction flexibility
by Lisa Irish
January 15, 2019

Education advocates spoke today in support of Senate Bill 1014, which provides schools flexibility in instruction for English Language Learners, and the Senate Education Committee approved the bill with amendments.

...SB 1014 would provide schools more flexibility in how they deliver instruction to English Language Learner (ELL) students and that would help more ELL students graduate high school on time. The ELL student graduation rate in Arizona is currently about 20 percent – the lowest for these students in the entire nation.

...Currently, English Language Learners spend four hours each school day in Structured English Immersion instruction. Senate Bill 1014 would let schools instead provide evidence- and research-based models of structured English immersion for 120 minutes a day, 600 minutes a week or 360 hours per yer to students in grades K-6 and 100 minutes a day, 500 minutes a week or 300 hours a year to students in grades 7-12.

Title: Game of Quotes: Excellent for Free Reading
Body:

From https://senorachase.com

Your InterCom editor, who was an avid reader as a K-12 student, never enjoyed writing book reports as an accountability tool for free reading. Here's a game she wishes she had been able to play instead: the Game of Quotes!

Here's a short description: after 15 minutes or so of free reading, the teacher puts up a prompt, such as "Best excuse for being late to class." Students have a few minutes to find a quote in their books and write in on a whiteboard. In small groups, students select the best (usually, funniest) quote of their group. The teacher collects the top quote from each group and the class votes on their favorite. Opportunities for target language input abound in the selection process.

Title: Finding Authentic Audiences for Your Students' Online Work
Body:

From https://www.theedublogger.com/authentic-audience/

Kathleen Morris writes, "For many of us, the work we created had a very limited audience. It may have only been seen by the teacher, or perhaps some classmates or family members (if it wasn’t left crumpled up in the bottom of the school bag!).

"Clearly, things have changed and it’s now possible for students to have a diverse audience for their work through platforms like blogs and digital portfolios.

"This is a great thing but where do you find the audience? Just because you publish something online, doesn’t mean it will be seen."

Read on for helpful ideas and infographics for sharing with classmates, families, teams in other classes, and more widely: https://www.theedublogger.com/authentic-audience/
