Title: Webinar: Vocab Learning and Beyond: Using Quizlet in the FL Classroom
Body:

From http://iallt.org/webinars/1-28-19/

Many instructors have likely heard of Quizlet as a free app for online flashcards; however, what may be less clear is how to effectively incorporate Quizlet’s various functions into the foreign language classroom. While Quizlet Live offers obvious classroom applications, there are other ways to help students learn to use Quizlet that will not only help with vocabulary acquisition, but also potentially improve pronunciation, increase independent study and critical thinking skills, and help foster a sense of community among class members. This webinar will offer some suggestions of untraditional ways to use Quizlet in a foreign language classroom.

Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute
June 17 to August 9, 2019
Madison, Wisconsin

SEASSI is an eight-week intensive language training program for undergraduates, graduate students and professionals. Languages offered are Burmese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Javanese, Khmer, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese.

Each language course is equivalent to two semesters of study, with full academic year credit. Instruction is intensive.

SEASSI also offers a limited number of spots for students to participate in SEASSI classes via distance.

Title: Montana Bills Aim to Extend Native Language Preservations, Help Fund English Learn Programs
Body:

From https://helenair.com/news/state-and-regional/govt-and-politics/bills-aimed-at-extending-native-language-preservation-helping-fund-english/article_64843db1-dd61-5d96-8736-e221ba324a91.html

Bills aimed at extending Native language preservation, helping fund English learner programs
by Michael Woodel
January 16, 2019

Lawmakers introduced bills Monday to extend a pair of Native language preservation programs and supplement federal grants for programs serving English learner students with state and local funding.

The bills come out of the State-Tribal Relations Interim Committee, which met between the 2017 and 2019 sessions, and are supported by the Montana School Boards Association, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation and the Fort Belknap Indian Community Council, among others.

Rep. Sharon Stewart Peregoy, a Democrat from Crow Agency, sponsored the English learner bill, which would require the state to at least partially match federal grants to programs for students with limited proficiency in the English language. The bill would make $500,000 available to the Office of Public Instruction to match federal money if passed, equal to the amount of federal money the state received in 2017-18 to fund programs for students with limited English proficiency.

...Rep. Jonathan Windy Boy, a Democrat from Box Elder, introduced a pair of bills that would extend the state Indian Language Preservation Program and the Cultural Integrity and Commitment Act through 2023.

Title: Overview of Xenophon's Writing
Body:

If you are considering reading Xenophon's writing with your Classics students, here are some more reasons to consider it: as a war veteran, his experiences resonate with veterans today; his recollections of Socrates paint a different picture from what we're used to seeing from Plato; and his other treatises, such as on horsemanship, are also full of timeless advice and observations.
